Chinatown’s “Hello Ladies”

This postcard, said to predate April 18, 1906 (the date of the great earthquake), depicts telephone operators in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The women are referred to as “centrals” or “hello ladies”, a term I was unfamiliar with and which may, or may not, have been a commonly used expression.
