I put a lot of thought into creating an excuse for posting this image. She is, after-all, speaking on what appears to be a Western Electric
302, so surely I could spin a telephone-related story around it. Well, I’ve given up, and chosen to present this illustration for what it is: a stunning example of comic-cheesecake-telephone art. Yea, that’s it!!!
Our young lady, Cindy’s the name, is shown here as seen on the cover of her own self-titled comic book. First published by Marvel Comics in 1947, this cover art is from issue #37, which I believe is from November of 1949. Cindy Comics represents what are sometimes called “good girl” comics, a genre that was similar to romance comics. Apparently “good girls” can wear clothes 2 sizes too small and tease the bejesus out of the neighborhood boys, but must not be criminals, as that would throw them into the “bad girl” category. As I understand it, Cindy was originally called Kooky Komics, and was renamed Cindy Smith Comics a couple of issues following this one. Boy, I sure went off topic this time…

I have an intercom from 1870 ish, need to check the hand signed paper from the installer inside the phone from the Islip Macy estate. It has been painted over but the paper naming the rooms is in tact. Any idea of its value? I have been carrying this around for 40 years. The wooden terminal board is in exc cond. the wires are in exc condition the magnet still has a charge. I thought of restoring it but It sits in the garage.

Pretty girls have been used to sell stuff since time began, in this case a copy of Cindy comic. I recall the furor back in 1989 when MacUser magazine, dedicated to the Apple Macintosh computer, had a model in a swimsuit in a pool with the then new Mac Portable. Many angry letters to the editor about how they read the magazine for the computer info and if they wanted to look at swimsuit models they’d read something else. Other letters pointed out the danger of using computer equipment while on an inner tube in the swimming pool, and still others pointed out that she needed to have the trackpad installed instead of the 10 key pad so that she could move the cursor around easily. Still have that issue out in the garage, I think, who’d throw that away?
