Interesting. First I've seen or heard of this size. If original it appears it's a later 1939 bell sign. The later ones didn't have the 3D affect with the lettering (layer difference between the white and blue that one can feel with their finger). Need to check the Western Electric catalog from that era or the BSP on sign usage/placement.

Don't believe I've ever seen this sign, this size.

That looks like what I would call a 55 MPH sign, something you could see from the highway on, say, a gas station sign letting people know there was a public phone there. With those mounting holes on both sides, it looks like it would withstand any kind of weather at height.

There was a day when the "call from your car pay phone" was hard to see from the road so such a visible at speed sign would be helpful. If I could only remember having seen one. I'm sure I did, just can't recall. And then some gas stations out in the weeds didn't have public payphones and getting off to browse the parking lot for one and not finding one was a waste of time. Just saying but that seems to fit into my road warrior days a century ago.

Another way cell phones have made certain parts of life so much more simple.
