Common Battery subset question

I have several magneto subsets in my collection and was curious how these were originally installed. It seems the would need to be within reach of a deskset, but placing it on a desk, table, table, etc seems to defeat the purpose of the deskset itself.   Does anyone have info on what the preferred installation arrangement would have been?

Sorry, I mis-read it.  With a magneto subset, mount it to the wall just like a wall phone, right where you have the desk stand.
