Hi Seb:

I can't answer your exact questions, but Brantford, Ontario is known as "Telephone City"

And it obviously was fastened onto something as a tag or label (two small nail or screw holes in it) rather thanit being a charm.

Hi Seb:

What are its dimensions. Hard to tell from the photo. I am thinking it might have been placed on a Telephone City souvenir or something originally? It is an interesting item!

Sorry. It's way bigger than you think. About 16  x 5 inches.

Hi Seb:

That is one thing about a photo - if it doesn't have something in it to be used as a size reference it is very difficult to get an idea of scale. It would not likely to be a booth sign, as Brantford was Bell country, and signs used there would have had the standard Bell Canada logos. However, if may have been used in some promotion of the city being named Telephone City by AGB.

You might try scraping down a small portion of the paint on the back to determine its original colours.

To me it looks home brew. Look at the difference in the spacing between the letters in "Telephone" vs the spacing in "City". Look at the misplaced leading "T" in "Telephone". And what is that extraneous period at the end of "City"? It is a great artifact - but if it is homebrew, there will likely be little information about it, so it will be hard to trace down.

I'm inclined to think its homebrew too.  I've been a geek and Internet Junkie for many years and it one of the first things I couldn,t find even an image of.

Nevertheless pretty cool. Once I fix it I should have nice sign for my phone room. It's in such bad shape that I can't make it worst. :)
