what sort of dial and handset cord? Straight grebe?

JubileeCompact

It is indeed a 1959 706- pics will follow when its been made pretty :). Its in Ivory and has a #12 Dial with figures in the Dial and an alphanumeric sujrround. The handset cord is sadly of the coiled sort although I believe this was made an option pretty early on. My Siemens 59 from Ebay last year has the fabric cord- see link ;).

Nice, the first 706... ;D

(For those across the pond, it's like the '49er 500, only 10 years late and british, bit like the railways at the time...  :D )

Presumably it has the Diakon plastics too, those apparently can be made to really shine compared to ABS plastic the later 706 phones used... :)

Soooo, can we see it?  ;D

david@london

had never heard of diakon, must look it out. [am definitely getting a 'D' in brit-phones.]
when was it in use ?.........my 706 is a 1961.

Write out 1000 lines of this:

"I must read http://www.britishtelephones.com more often!!!"

:D

Diakon was used in the early days of the 706, kind of an intermediate step between Bakelite and ABS plastic, but like Bakelite, it can chip and crack easily, even though it can remain shiny and new looking for years... :)

Little bit of info on the 706 cases:

i think i have a diakon phone, reading the notes on dates and markings.

inside the earcap is stamped No. 26, inside speakercap No 21.

mould mark is 12.

Cool, I checked my manual 706 earlier, and it's all ABS as it has the "17" markings and the "A" for ABS on the part numbers, the case does seem quite thick in comparison to my 746 cases though, but that could just be part of the differences in their design... :)

david@london

the diakon is glass-like and translucent, esp the numberplate.

i reckon the one mentioned here is an early diakon one, too.......from the colour and general look.

Could be, but someone else has bought it, so, we may never know... ???

The dial rings on the 706 from what I know are generally transparent with the numbers & colour printed on the back (presumably to prevent rub-off), repros are generally just standard replacement coloured 746 ones with the numbers & letters printed on the front, makes it easier to tell an original from a replacement... :D

david@london

what's the best way to get glue from an old sticker off this diakon plastic ?

twocvbloke

Usually I use lighter fluid (for zippo-type lighters) for removing sticky label mess, though I'm not sure if that's okay on Diakon or not, the practice of testing it with a very small amount in an inconspicuous area first (inside the case for example) would probably assist there, though as it's essentially perspex, it should be okay, but try the inconspicuous test first to be sure, cos I can't be sure myself... :D

david@london

thanks.......worked a treat.

jubilee c........ sorry for hijacking yr post..........just passing the time while yr cleaning up the 59er !

WD40 is pretty good at glue goo. But not certain if any plastics out there might object to it or not.
