can anyone tell me the approximate dates these dial card types were originally used in phones? the numbercard archive doesn't seem to give that kind of background info.

My guess is use the black card with white rectangle for 1952 and the all gray one (usually without the "wait for dial tone") for 1959.

Actually, where I live by early 1959 they were phasing out those two in favor of ones that showed the area code and all numbers.

I agree with David. Those all gray ones really were light gray when new. I have a few of them that I got with a stamper. They tended to fade badly and get rust stains over the years.

There was also the "in-between" card that had two letters and five numbers, with the last four of the numbers stamped. It was also light gray and included the area code. I would place that one from 1959 to 63 or so. Some places let go of exchange names slower than others.

I have an aunt who to this day thinks "ME3" when she calls her sister, who has had the same phone number since about 1956. ME was short for MElrose, BTW.
