Title: What is your favorite "One Hit Wonder" Song?
Post by: Jim King on January 21, 2011, 05:52:02 AM
I like a few of the "one hit wonders" from over the years, but my favorite is-
Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me), by Reunion. 1974
You Tube has a fun video to go along with it.

It's difficult to pick just one.  The first one that comes to my mind is In The Year 2525 by Zager & Evans.  I also liked The Rapper by Jaggerz, and Ma Belle Amie by the Tee Set.

Good question.  There are many great One Hit Wonders.

That's funny, Doug.  That could be the subject of another "off topic" conversation.  Song lyrics that aren't what we thought they were.  When I was young and first heard The Buckinghams sing Kind of a Drag, I thought they were saying "Canada Dry".....a soft drink maker.

Dennis, That's like I heard "In the garden of Eden" when everyone at that time swore it was "inagaddadavida".

Great topic!  I would have picked Life Is A Rock too, but since that was taken, my next favorite OHW would be Stuck In The Middle With You by Steelers Wheel.

Unfortunately, the singer on that song, Gerry Rafferty, just passed away (on Jan. 4).

I don't know for sure if Stealers Wheel only had this one hit, but it's called that.
"Stuck in the Middle with You", Gerry Rafferty.

Indeed, far too many choices.  One of my favorites is from Kai Winding, who was responsible for more albums than many other one-hit wonders, but had his one big hit, "More."  (pun intended)   ;)

Briny, that's one I had forgotten about and a good one.  I saw that group perform that song (and a few others) in concert in Detroit back in 1970-something....about 1973.  Also on stage that day was a band called Black Oak Arkansas and Bad Company.  Ever hear of those bands?

Radar Love is a great song but I wouldn't call it a One Hit Wonder. Golden Earring also did Twilight Zone.
> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1sf2CzEq0w < I worked with a guy in the 80's that said when he was in the Army stationed in Germany that Golden Earring was the hottest group over there, and that he had 5 of their albums. Golden Earring was from The Netherlands.

I guess we should define what a hit is.  Is a hit anything that charted in the top 100?  If so The Marmalade has several songs to chart on the top 100.  Many more in the UK.

I always thought a hit was a number one song.

Shows you how long I haven't followed the rock scene.  The nine year gap between Radar Love and Twilight Zone is when they were being called a "one hit wonder" band.  That clip you linked to is perfect, has a rotary phone in it!  I even have the 1947 song they named the group after on an old 78 rpm somewhere.

Nine years is quite a gap between hits in the U.S. but during that time they were still big in Europe with 30 gold & platinum albums. > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Earring < It seems like whenever I hear Radar Love while driving I automatically start going faster. And when I hear Hot Rod Lincoln while driving it can get dangerous. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDbON8udTPo&feature=fvsr <

When I was young and first heard The Buckinghams sing Kind of a Drag, I thought they were saying "Canada Dry".....a soft drink maker.
There was an old joke about this last heard in the 1960's.

A fellow in the US went to visit Canada. He never returned causing much concern amongst his friends. Ten years later, they formed a search party, and went to Canada to look for him.

Eventually, they found him, drunk in a ditch not far from the border. When they asked him why he had stayed, he replied, "When I crossed the border, the first thing I saw was a sign which said 'Drink Canada Dry". "I have been trying to do that ever since!"

Could we make that tale into a one hit wonder?

i will suggest "love grows (where my rosemary goes)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tr6H1a7YUac)........... by edison lighthouse............ it was  a 1-hit wonder circa 1970 - it topped the charts in the uk  i think!

I remember it well here in Canada so it must have done well in North America as well.

On a side note, I like this topic and so do many of us based on the number of times viewed and number of posts added since Jim King started it in January 2011. So I "Sticky'ed it so that it is always visible at the top of the "Off Topic" board.

"Love Grows", Edison Lighthouse:

Most links are there for page 2, but page 1 needs:

"In the Year 2525", Zager & Evans:

"Stuck in the middle with you", Steeler's Wheel:

Just goes to prove that there aren't many songs which can't be found on You Tube, no matter how old or how popular. I will often go there to look up one song, then be stuck there forever following the songs linked on the right hand side.

Good one Dan. Every time someone mentions another song, it reminds me of others. This is one with a close connection to phone collecting.

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz-UvQYAmbg

This was filmed on the day that my high school class visited Expo 67 in Montreal . It was filmed in front of the Ontario Pavilion with one of the many modernistic  Bell Canada/Northern Electric panel payphone kiosks at the fair in the background.

Incidentally, later in the day, I made sure to have my photo taken in front of this very booth - alas, it has long since been lost. I wish I still had it!

It's funny, some radio ads still use that style of ringing tone for making telephone-based ads (whatever the subject), even though it's been defunct for over 20 years... :D

Come to think of it, that ringing tone may have come from one of these:

In a bit of a departure from other songs poster here, this should bring back some memories of the  original recorded by Benjamin Earl King (Ben E. King)

This song was performed by street performers simultaneously around the world:

I know I'm very late to the party here, but I wanted to add a couple of things (I loved the movie too!)
Didja notice that the bass player had no name? He's only ever called "the bass player"; he's even in the credits as "T.B. Player". I laughed when someone said the "Oh Needers" and the lead guitar player corrected him, saying something like "No, we're The 'Oh Nedders'." Another thing that was surprising to me in such a music-heavy film was that ALL of the music in the movie were new original period-flavored compositions: "Mr. Downtown", the instrumental "Voyage Around the Moon" by Saturn 5, "My World Is Over" by Diane Dane, every one of the tunes (29 according to IMDB)!

Real One Hit Wonder this one

I loved this song when I was 11. Still do. Nice message. Think of my wife when I hear it.

I always liked those sappy love songs.

Great song, Bill.  I remember it well from the summer of 1969.  I was 14 then living in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  Just hearing it brings back a lot of memories from then....like watching Apollo 11 streak toward the moon that July.  Thanks for sharing it.

Yea, Dennis, that was the greatest year of my childhood. I was a space junkie. Canadiens won the Stanley Cup on my birthday of all things. Then dad moved us all from Montreal to Hawaii.

Hawaii is a geat place to be when you first start to notice girls.

Not exactly one hit wonders, however, definitely a "Blast From The Past"! but I discovered something I heard back in the 70s that I had completely forgotten about...

Wolfman Jack made guest appearances on numerous Top 40 stations over the years in addition to his regular radio and TV gigs. In the mid-'70s, the Wolf travelled north of the border to host the Sunday night Canadian Graffiti show on CHUM FM on Feb 22 1976. I was in T.O. at the time, and remember this broadcast. CHUM was Toronto's rock station.

I happen to collect "one hit wonders" as well as telephones. A point to note for "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" - while Edison Lighthouse only had the one hit (they were essentially a studio compiled band) - their singer Tony Burrows (again a studio musician) had at least 5 top 40 hits all with different bands.  They include:
- White Plains' My Baby Loves Lovin'
- First Class' Beach Baby
- The Brotherhood of Man's United We Stand
- The Pipkins' Gimme Dat Ding
- The Flower Pot Men Let's Go to San Francisco

Anybody remember the Telephone Man song?  Sung by a girl possibly in the 70s.  I remember some of the lyrics- "Hey baby I'm your telephone man", and " You can stick it over here, you can stick it over there".

A well done funny lip sync version of this song:

The Beetles were just a one decade wonder.

And not even that. I was doing sound for a play and the director asked me to put together an opening piece playing 10 to 20 seconds of a top 10 popular hit from each decade starting in 2010 and going backward to 1880 ending with a wax drum recording of "Sweet Marie." One of the two times the critic ever included sound design in their review of the play. Anyway, in compiling that musical jaunt through history, to my surprise I discovered the Beatles had no hit in 1960 or 1970. Love Me Do in England in '62 and their breakout in the states in '64 through the shoeless Paul on the cover of Abbey Road in '69, their last group work before they broke up in early '70. Their whole career as a group took place in live time for me. Seemed they were around a lot longer than they were but I got to say, I really don't remember much of anything from the '60s . . .  ;)

So, what, a half-decade wonder?

I was there in the '60s and didn't care for the Beatles back then. But as I got older I've come to enjoy their later stuff. Even enjoyed Ringo Starr's career post Beatles. Love his 1974 No No song.
