Post by: paul-f on September 30, 2015, 10:26:32 PM
Please reserve this date.

Following many months of planning and preparation, the auction is in the final production stage. Some basic info is included in the attached announcement. You can also view the announcement at:   http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/ (http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/)

Photos and periodic status updates will be posted there, as more details become available, including specific preview and auction times.

If planning to travel, the Brattleboro, VT area offers lower price lodging than Keene, NH.

Thanks, Paul Fassbender

The auction includes an unprecedented variety of historical telephones and paraphernalia from the early 1900s through the end of the century. More than 3,000 telephones in over 400 cataloged lots plus numerous uncataloged lots will be auctioned.

The collection was amassed over several decades and includes items previously in prominent private collections, Telephone Pioneer museums, inventory from telephone refurbishers and some that are viewable at
http://www.paul-f.com (http://www.paul-f.com/). A few have even appeared as props in major motion pictures.

Included are: antique wood and candlestick telephones of the early 1900s, metal desk and wall sets of the 20s – 30s, Deco-style Bakelite sets from the 30s – 40s, numerous and unusual variations of the standard Bell System "workhorse" phones from the 30s – 70s, "modern" decorator, character and novelty phones from the 70s – 80s, plus much more.

In addition to phones made in the US, there are telephones from Canada, the UK, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, Spain, Egypt, Russia, Japan, Australia and other countries.

Too many items to list here. A partial list includes:

· Categories: standard single-line sets, keysets, consoles, magneto sets, interphone and intercom sets, field phones, railroad equipment, military phones, speakerphones, conference phones, automatic dialers, answering machines, teletrainers, novelty phones, decorator phones, phone toys, tools and test equipment, etc.

· Groupings: Early production examples of popular models, unusual clear plastic geometric phones from Teleconcepts, a large group of Bell System Olympic 1984 phones with attached statues representing Olympic events, intercoms by Rauland and Dictograph, American Club LTD decorated Contempras, Grabaphones, Loeffler phones, etc.

· Attachments: directories, shoulder rests, ashtrays, and music-on-hold rests.

· Oddities: limited production voice stress and voice dialing telephones, phone lamps, Bell System commemorative items (e.g., a phone issued on the closing of the Western Electric Indianapolis phone manufacturing plant and bookends from the Kearney Works), a pen register with take-up reel, radio broadcast interface gear, etc.

· Parts: ringers, dials, subsets, housings, key boxes, speakerphone components, parts-donor telephones and parts for phone repairs.

On-line photos of each cataloged lot will be available later in October. Uncataloged lots must be viewed on-site. On-site preview dates and times TBA.

Are you selling any Northern Telecom Imagination Series Sets other than the plane phones?

Absolutely!

From memory, there are Athenas, Dawns, a Diplomat, Kangaroos and Rendezvous sets.  There's also a version of the Ditto with a European dial.

There are also some interesting Contempra variations including at least one two line model, a set modified for use as a radio broadcast interface and several of the American Club decorated sets with leather on the handsets and, of course, a few Talia models.  One lot has sets with all three colors of leather.

They'll be shown in the on-line catalog when available. In the meantime, you can see examples here:  http://www.paul-f.com/Imagination.html (http://www.paul-f.com/Imagination.html)

That's amazing.  I hope those are cataloged, as I won't be able to be there in person.  Always looked for a nice blue athena and never could find one.

The formal auction announcement with terms has been posted on the auctioneer's site and at:
   http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/index.html#Announcement (http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/index.html#Announcement)

Preview times will be on Friday, October 30 12 - 6 pm & Sat. Oct. 31st  9 - 11 AM or by appointment.

While the live auction will start at 11am, on-line bidding may start later, after uncataloged lots are auctioned.  Watch for updates.

Details of the uncataloged lots will not be available before you see them at the preview.  I have added some photos from the cataloging process and will post some general photos of some of the uncataloged lots over the next week or so.
   http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/index.html#Cataloged (http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/index.html#Cataloged)

If you win a lot of items, the auctioneer will hold items for a short time if you decide to pick them up in person following the auction, rather than have them shipped.

The on-line catalog has been posted. Apparently on-line bidding is available.

A few photos didn't get properly linked in and there are a few typographical errors that will hopefully be corrected in a day or two.

If you'd like to suggest any changes or corrections, please PM or email me privately.

Any of these links should get you there.

While waiting for a few more photos to be added to the on-line catalog, I've posted some photos on the Cataloged Lots section here:
   http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/index.html#Cataloged (http://www.paul-f.com/Auction/index.html#Cataloged)

They include these two intercoms.  One has a strange handset.  Does anyone recognize it?

In response to some questions, the added photos are primarily additional views of phones such as early candlesticks, wood phones and subsets, Teleconcepts geometric sets, AE 35 wall sets and Ericofons (to show the touch tone dials on some sets).

In addition, some lots now have photos highlighting one or two items that didn't show well in the group photos.

Here are some lots with new photos that deserve another look.

Lot 125 shows the translucent base on the presentation "speakerphone."

Lot 135 shows the metal clad Stowaway with the cover closed.

Lot 160 shows the internal cassette player that makes the Bear speakerphone point of sale display unit work.

Lot 185, the Western Electric 525BW outdoor phone. Photos were added showing the interior with dial and handset and the back, showing the mounting bracket that is often not present. The set also has a proper lock and key.

Lot 188 now shows the Bendix Radio logo and front of those units.

Lots 272 and 337 show the volume adjusting knob behind the cradle on the AE amplified sets.

Lot 277 shows the ringer lever adjustment on the side of the sets.

Lots 286 and 323 show the field trial stickers on the bottom of the Northern QSQE2500 ePhones.

Lot 387 has a back view showing the perches and knurled knob on the 20B.

Lot 388 shows a close-up of two of the Kellogg dial sets plus the components inside the subset.

Lot 396 shows the rotary doorknow assembly and transmitter paperweight/microphone.

Lot 398, a miscellaneous lot including two Imperial Princess set and strange shaped Stentofon and "Herald-a-phone" sets.

Thanks for the support many of you have provided during this process. I hope to see some of you at the preview tomorrow to thank you personally.

Just wanted to bump this topic back to the top for today. The auction is in progress. There has been some good deals. There is an 18% buyers premium and a 5% internet fee. Packing and shipping is thru a shipping store so there is a lot of additional costs on the items, but even with all the fees there has been some really good deals sold.

Yes, I'm watching also.   I did just win my first batch of phones.  I'm anxious to see how high the shipping fees are going to be.

Thanks to all who participated in the auction in person or via the internet almost all of the lots were successfully placed with collectors, several museums, including the JKL Museum, and dealers. I trust those in dealer hands will quickly find their way into collections or parts supplies that will last quite a while.

By Sunday afternoon, we saw three of the phones already displayed in an antique mall in central Vermont.

Hello,

this is my first post here on the forum. As an Ericofon collector I also won one of the lots (292) from Paul-F on the auction in October. It was quite a challenge to bid in an overseas online auction and to get them here. But  finally they are a great asset to my collection.

And all 5 Ericofons in the lot were top quality!! Thanks.

Best regards

Paul

Welcome to the Rotary Phone Forum EricofonNL. Good to hear that you found some deals and were able to get them to Europe (presumably) successfully.

I missed this auction, I was on a cruise ship. Just like the Roger Conklin collection auction, I was on a different cruise ship then!

I do find myself wondering if any sales statistics are released on either of these auctions indicating the final selling prices of any of the lots. It would be interesting to look at pictures along with the selling price so we could see if we are missing some major deals on these large auctions.

Welcome to the group, Paul.  And thanks for your auction participation.

Terry, the auction catalog with results are still viewable on the Invaluable site mentioned in this post:

You have to create an account to see the prices.

I was able to view the entire auction with "unverified prices" without signing in here:

Aaah, yes that worked. So presumably the "unverified price" is mostly correct and was the final price before buyers premium, internet premium and shipping of course.

Lots of bargains but some WoW prices in there as well. Interesting.

Was that just a start at cleaning out the storage areas Paul or did that get you down close to where you want to be for now at least?

Yes, correct. The yellow and grey caugth my attention in this lot. In other (Ericofon) lots there were also interesting models but my budget was limited.

And this is the story behind the catch...  ;)

Thanks Harry...you must have bid on one of the auctions as I could not see any prices either.  I was shocked how inexpensive some of the phones or groups of phones went for. I know Paul put a lot of money and time into this collection. I saw it before in was fully organized and there was a HUGE amount of telephones. Paul is one of the good guys in our hobby....but you already knew that!....Doug
