Title: Shiny AE A1
Post by: Pourme on June 24, 2018, 06:28:12 PM
I saw this...I liked it....I offered $75.00....seller accepted.

https://tinyurl.com/yarkkyfm ( dead link 02-09-22 )

Wonder how it came to be chromed? Was there a private/commercial re builder that did these conversations? Don't know if handset is painted, seller hasn't responded.

Comments on any observations welcomed!

Benny

Set was assembled by Chicago old Telephone co.I might have even built it.Handset is painted with custom metal bands.Cradle is off a Belgium set by  ATEA., Base is a repro WE  from Phone co. Dial is a AE conversion using custom parts -I know i built it. The plating alone would cost you more than you payed

I tend to read so much about different phones here and other sources, it's difficult for me to recall it all. When I saw the chrome base, I thought it had been a reproduction by someone. Thanks for the response rdelius.

If you did it, at least I know it was done well! The look is a good look. I'm pleased!

Thanks again!

Glad you added that....

Today I was thinking about that. I was going to ask you about that. There is another one on EBAY with a network and buzzer.

Someone cracked open the piggy bank and two phones fell out.

Is that one of yours, too?

I did not assemble that one but it is from COT.Phoneco sold them also but used lesser quality dials, plastic handsets from Norway sets and painted cradles. We did use type 38 handsets but they got to hard to find

Well it came in today & I must say I like it very much. My complements to rdelius! You did good!

I polished it good, it hadn't been polished in a while. It has a rattler inside as a ringer, everything works as it should.

I hate the cheap ugly brown cloth cords. It's almost like they have coat hanger wires inside.

I ordered a ivory braided handset cord for it from Old Phone Shop, on EBAY.  https://tinyurl.com/y92luhs8 (Picture below)

This will look so much nicer.

I also parked it next to my A1 so you can see the difference.

I'll post pics of the inside soon.

Benny

Edit: I ordered the matching line cord as well.....She deserves it! (Yes, I assigned a gender.)
Title: Re: Shiny AE A1
Post by: rdelius on June 29, 2018, 08:23:15 PM
We had that cord made locally. Sent 100 foot spools to cotton mills that made shoe laces and covered it. It made putting modular connectors on it easy and quick. The other  coradge that was being sold was loosely woven braided imported stuff that could not be gaurenteed by us to hold up. Some batches were stiffer than others.House of Telephones was not making cordage  yet and Runzel might have been out of business
Title: Re: Shiny AE A1
Post by: Pourme on June 29, 2018, 08:56:45 PM
That was probably a good way to provide cordage at a very good price.

Do you know what these sold for?

My cords came in today and I also took some pictures of the inside.

rdelius,  There are two hand written notations on stickers on the inside. Perhaps you recognize the initials? (one fell loose)

It appears the phone was assembled in 1988 and a adjustment was made in '90.

The braided ivory cord does the trick!

These are really nice phones. I really love mine. The paint job on the handset is flawless. Beautiful appearance and they work perfectly.

I must say after seeing a couple more of them, I really got a good buy!

You got a better deal. Those norwegian handsets are light weight plastic.I doubt any of them were sold at that kind of price unless a custom job with gold plating.

I guess i'm trying to keep up with Benny. I bought this on ebay because I've been looking for a chrome D1 for quite a while. I bought this thing for less than I could get a D1 body & cradle chromed for. looks like a AE handset. I thought it looked nice, even though its a frankenphone.

I call it a shiny  phone. I like those, I buy shiny phones for my non-standard finish collection. It is a nice frakenphone  I am cool with it as well.

Please put it int the find of the month. Add why it is cool to you.  I suspect  it is cool to me for the same reasons.
Nice find.

I think it would look good with an E1. However, that early  AE handset with chrome bands really looks sharp on that phone. Since I like shiny phones, the look is were it is at. If it were mine, I would leave it as it is.
Just my opinion,

Thanks Doug, I was the 1st bidder & bid $120, hoping to get the phone at closer to the opening price of $69 but somebody bid me through the roof. Could it have been a tactic of the seller? Having somebody bid it up? The bidding seems weird to me.

Hmmm... I took a look at the bidding, that comes across as very odd to me too. Pushing it up so many times by just $2 on each bid. Maybe so they could retract their 'last bid' yet stay close to your top bid (if/when theirs went higher than yours). Is there any way to nicely question it via eBay? Maybe a quick chat with them? They might be able to see how closely (in distance or otherwise) the other bidder info resembles the seller info. They won't (and shouldn't) release any of the other bidder info, but they will be able to see if the other bidder lives in the same town as the seller, and how recent their eBay Account is.

Either way, very nice phone, I would be very pleased to have one in my collection.

That style or type of bidding is not unusual. Since I update the number of bidders and bids on each auction contest, I see it often.

In this case, the buyer l***d ( 267) placed a very high bid on 9/23 and 6 days later, a very new eBay buyer p***s (1) saw the listing sitting at its listed price. That buyer then bid the minimum only to find out he/she was overbid. So, another minimum bid and overbid again. Kept this up for 15 more times and at $105 was still overbid. p***s (1) at that point did not want to pay more than $105 for the phone and it went to l***d ( 267) for $107.50, the minimum increase of $2.50 once over $100, and high bid l***d ( 267) was never exposed, topped by any other buyer.

Auction contest 345 had a similar bidding style except the winning buyer a***d (94)s high bid was exposed twice by a***u (368) so had to increase his/her bid and then put in an even higher bid about 4 hours after the last bid was placed by a***u (368) to make sure they won the phone. a***u (368) gave up at $150 and a***d (94) won the phone for the minimum bid, $2.50, over a***u (368)'s final bid.

That minimum bidding technique is nothing more than someone trying to expose the bid placed by another buyer and allows the multiple buyer to either expose the high bid or stop bidding when the amount they last entered was the maximum they would want to spend for the item.

Nothing strange or "illegal" about it, just the way some buyers choose to bid.

(PS: this does not rule out shill bidding, the seller having a second account or a friend, to bid the item up to a selling price the seller finds acceptable, and that is frowned upon by eBay but hard to expose or prove - a buyer with a feedback rating of 1 might indicate a shill account)

The base is a reproduction WE base and bottom cover. The handset is an AE type 41 with custom brass rings added. Dial is AE, Cradle is off an ATEA  set (belgium AE). The base is solid brass  it will polish nicely.Cradle is plated so be carefull. I might have built that set. I do not remember what they sold for but they usually sell for over $100.00

Yes, I'm afraid it does. Quite loudly. And with every quack the eyes light up and flash too (red).

If I film it ringing quacking, will this site accept it as an attachment I wonder....   :)

Have you received your shiny yet, Fab?

Aw, thanks for asking :)     It has arrived, but I am not there to open the box.
I have a backlog going back quite a few weeks - some spares I really could do with right now, some GPO phones plus a dozen or so U.S. and Canadian phones all waiting for me.
I will post a photo asap.   :D

The shiny has arrived.  :)

Haven't had a chance to take a proper look at it yet but it has a nice tidy Ivory handset. Am looking forward to getting the polish out to see how well this comes up.  :D

do not polish the cradle the plating might wear through and it might be lacquered also

As advised, no polish on the cradle. I just swiftly added a touch of gleam with a soft cloth. Came up well.
I did this one by hand. On the body I first used Brasso, then my favourite - Autosol (Chrome and Metal polish).
Polishing Paste #5 on the handset.

'Before' pic three posts above  ^

Very pleased. That's quite some reflection of the handset.   :)

That turned out better than I expected it to. Very nice looking telephone.
