Seller Listing Title: "Rare Kellogg Masterphone 1000 Red Bar Vintage Desk Telephone - Rare Brown Bakelite 'Red Bar' Working Telephone"
Condition: "Used"
Condition Qualifier: "Absolutely Stunning. In new like condition"
Listing Description: "This is a rare, working, 'near new' Kellogg Masterphone Red Bar 1000 Desk Telephone. The Red Bar phone was manufactured from 1947 to 1953. This solid mahogany colored Bakelite telephone is one of the finest examples I've seen. -- The entire phone is without any damage, scratches or cracks. The Body and handset were gently hand buffed and polished. -- The very sculpted Bakelite Body and Handset look as elegant today as they did 70 years ago. The chrome finger wheel is in excellent condition, with no rust or pitting. The internal component design was years ahead. No messy wires, this was solid state electronics long before there ever was solid state. The porcelain number plate is brand new with no wear or damage. -- Note... The small red button is a switch used for signaling when the phone was installed on what was called a Party Line. It is no longer functional. -- The original factory finish on the metal bottom still looks great. Included are reproduction cloth covered handset and line cords just like the original. In my opinion the Kellogg Masterphone was one of the finest desk sets ever made. "

i'm thinking that this must be a select-o-phone variant, where the walnut colour was often used, installed on the base, internals and dial of a 1000BA model.

I agree. I don't think they will work on a regular phone line.

330.00 I wish I could go back in time with an empty wrapping paper tube and whack the person who put that button in it. Otherwise this is a beauty.
"Ditto" Butch. A 1000BA signifies a common battery set with a (BA) high impedance 4000 ohm ringer, which this one has (2000 x 2=4000). I sold a mahogany set several years ago on eBay, and it sold for $650.00 USD if memory serves me. It was somewhere between excellent and mint condition, but it had no push button switch, and had an actual Kellogg dial with a mint condition matching mahogany Bakelite finger wheel. Another collector told me it was the mint Bakelite finger wheel that pushed the price up apparently, as a lot of them get damaged or broken.

I am referring to the select-o-phone version. They need a special controller to work. Beside telephone and intercom, you can use them for automation. Dial 3 to unlock door, 4 to turn on lights, things like that. ISTR that you dial a number and push the button to activate that feature.
I saw a portable salesman sample system once, They phones are really cool with the controller.

Jim S.

I guess that button was more of an issue that we assumed. Pity that. It's beautiful otherwise.
