I had bought some lamp oil at a general store and put it up for when I needed it.  I got it out and it had opaque flakes in it which would not liquefy no matter how hard I shook it.  I had to do something so put it in my cheepie weepie glass flat wick lamp.  It took 20 minutes for the wick to take the stuff up.  I lit it and it emitted major black smoke, then the wick went cherry red and smoldered til i managed to pinch it off.  That was the day I learned about the difference between "lamp oil"  and "kerosene"   ;D

That'll be American kerosene, not British kerosene. UK kero is basically diesel, so works in an oil lamp.
