The jack can be seen frequently, but I never saw a socket for it, or an instrument where it would go to?

I have seen this on German style field telephones and Danish telephones. the handset appears to be of a German pattern.

Don't some switchboards have a socket for a handset like that???
My SC turret has one on the front.

The German field phones I know have 5 prongs and a different pattern.
But in fact my Danish magneto phone has this type of plug! I had never thought of it. So it seems to be some type of international industry standard. Very well possible that it was used on switchboards on a more common basis.
