Oddball 302 (F1W/AA1) - What's This About?

I took this 302 in trade knowing full well it was a F1W/AA1 non-Bell phone. I was intrigued by a little bit of red which was visible in the photos.

Anyone have a clue why they would use translucent red for the bit of plastic above the switch assembly?

I had that on one of my 302s before, especially the part under the carry handle, which was a dark purple color.

It was discussed quite some time back on the TCI list and if I recall correctly, it was traced back to a specific WECo plant, possibly in Louisiana.
