Picked up a grubby and paint splattered 1553, decided to try sanding the case (400, 800, and 1500 grit) definitely need to go further, but it looks much better already.

There's a tiny bit of paint splatter on the dial, but I really am not sure how to clean that up without damaging the printing on the dial, so I have left it as is.

Also the bumble bee capacitor for the ringer was toast, I replaced it with a modern .47uf 275v polypropylene cap.

I think I will pick up a buffing wheel and try some novus plastic polish on the body of it and see if I can get that like-new shine to it.  If this project turns out like I hope, I have a Northern Electric 554 in Aqua that's faded to almost an olive green, I'd like to sand and buff it out too, since I hear the retr0bright process tends to make a mess of colored plastics.

Those are cool phones. They are a piece of telephone history as well.  I have one I bought from kleenax recently.

I have a cleaner/wax I use to remove pant specs like that.

OK, sure.

I would hesitate to recommend it at this point because a friend of mine that started the company pass away and the family took the company over. I'm not convinced they are making the quality product he did for many years. At one time this wax was very popular among the car collector crowd.

Full disclosure: I used to sell this on EBAY but I haven't been associated with the business for a couple of years.

The name of the wax is Satin Gloss. I have also used the metal polish to help clean Bakelite and to remove paint...the metal polish has a light abrasive in it. When I use my supply I will be looking for a replacement product my self!
