Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen the insides of one of these.  Nifty!  I also don't think I've seen an 80 foot mounting cord! Geez, that thing's long.

That must be an earlier Starlite.  Later versions had the switch hook under only one side.

Yes. I thought the same thing when carrying it to the counter. I had a stack of cord under one arm. This was one of those units you could use while hanging out the laundry  . There was only one part I seen with a serial number on it and for whatever reason I did not take a pic of it.

the long cord is for dragging the phone into the bathroom for those super secret teenage conversations.

 Also, the handset cord on the newer versions is centered on the phone, not off to the left side.
 
 I have a later one in the same color with a green faceplate and also a green wall version with the faceplate like Craig T's. I really like them, the dials are very smooth and I find the sound quality is really good and louder than any of my other phones.
