Title: What else do you guys collect?
Post by: Steve on December 22, 2008, 10:15:14 PM

I collect old stuff. I was mostly raised by my Grandparents, they born in the mid teen's.

they showed me a great way of looking at things :)

So... I have lots of pre WWII stuff. my Wife's father was born in 1918, and when I met her, (and ultimately went to their home) I got the warm fuzzys.

Eastlake furniture.
art deco lines.
reminds me of Home:)

I enjoy the quality of older things.

what else do you gent's collect?

show me yours, I'll show you mine :)

Nowadays, I collect old radios, telephones, 78 RPM records, and old radio shows from the 1920s through the 1960s.  I've gone through phases in collecting, though.  I used to collect watches, fountain pens, old magazines, and tons of other stuff.

O'MAN..

78'RPM's were my thing.

I had over a thousand at one time, then we moved. :(

MARIO LANZA! OLD BLUES!

got rid of the Victrola.

we had to downsize a few years ago during a move,
now
I have that many (or more) 33 1/3 now. but,I love jazz and blues so the pain is still there.

Edited to say: I love the fact that I can post my pics as a zoomable photo. I will post bunches more if you guys like them. IF I can edit what I post! got some photos you guys will like, I just am not a real savvy guy as far as forum stuff gos.

Steve.  Through the power vested in me (from Mark Stevens)  I have removed the photo that you put on upside down.  You probably could have done it too, but clicking on "modify" then where you put attachments, just uncheck the box for the first attachement.

Ancient Roman coins.  My collecting area is 2nd and 3rd century denarii and antoninianii and large folli from the Tetrarchy through the time of Constantine.  I also like Republican and Imperatorial coinage.  If you have any LMK, will trade handset cords.

Nice coin.  I think the inscription reads "Imperator Caesar Valenius Licinius Licinianus Pius Felix Augustus"

Or, "I'm the Big Cheese"

One of the two.

(oops, I realized at about 5am this morning that it should be "Pius Filus" and not "felix".  How's that for an indicator that I had too much time on my hands?)

I like Mario Lanza a lot.  Not because he died young but because he could really sing before he was famous.

Have you compared him to Caruso?

I prefer basic blues.  I don't always understand Jazz and Opera.  They are too complicated.  But when Mario sings;  I am in heaven.

I'm always having dodge all the beautiful women when I go out, even wear dark glasses and pull my ball cap low,  as there is nothing more attractive to women than a guy with a bunch of old rotary phones.

You were right the first time.  It translates to Imperator ("Conquering general") Valerius Licinianus Licinius (full name) Pius Felix ("dutiful and wise") Augustus ("emperor").  As co-emperor from 308-324 he was more of a second banana than a big cheese.

Ah, guess my college era Latin is rusty.  The only thing I use it much for is reading the latin on college logos on people's sweatshirts or such.

I only have one Roman coin, a small bronze with Constantine the Great on it.  In a moment of pure utter brilliance I cleaned it so it would be nice and shiny.  I can just hear the guy on Antiques Roadshow, "Well, this was a rare coin of a type unknown, clearly the sole surviving representative of it's group.  It was worth about 200 billion dollars.  But since you cleaned it with Ajax and silver polish it's worth about a buck fifty nine."

I wouldn't worry too much.  It was probably only worth about $5-10 anyway, so it wasn't too devastating a loss.  Bury it in your yard, in another century or so the patina will return and no one will know the difference.

I collected old bottles many years ago, and had many that represented obscure brands of "pop". A friend of mine has the most extensive collection of Texas bottles in existence.  This photo shows part of his collection (less than a quarter of them), lined up alphabetically by city.

Regarding those bottle collecting, here are some bottles we dug up in a historic district in Manila during an archaeological excavation last summer, unfortunately I don't keep those bottles, the National Museum has it now

the first two bottles are made of stoneware and it is used as Ink bottles, the second two are glass

I have been into Lionel trains for a long time, and have a decent sized collection(if you can call it that).

For the most part, I don't  buy high-end collector grade trains, but just good, solid operator grade equipment. I also get a lot of enjoyment out of buying trains out of the "junk bin" and bringing them back to life.

Here are a few older photos of my small layout(it's changed a fair amount since these were taken-I need to take some more)

I also dabble some in photography, and as an offshoot of that collect cameras(that I use). I have owned an example every pre-autofocus single lens reflex Canon has made at various times, and these are my main workhorse cameras.  I also like old Rolleiflex twin lens reflexes, and have a couple of those.

Ben; I love Lionel trains but I don't collect them. I have one simple newer little New York Central set.  That's some pretty cool stuff you have there.  What is that big transformer looking thingy?  Don't tell me; a big transformer thingy? ;)

Is the green engine that famous one from Scotland?  I forget the name.
Have you ever seen replicas (Lionel or otherwise) of the streamliners designed by Henry Dreyfuss and/or Raymond Loewy?  Those make me drool.

Ramil;  I've always been interested in archeology but I don't think I'd have the patience.  What other cool things do you find in Old Town Manilla?  I hung out with a archeologist in Sicily for a bit.  Pretty amazing stuff there.

Okay, Mark, you're friends' bottle collection just leaves me speechless. :o

Thanks for the compliments. You guessed it correctly :) . I'm not sure which one you're referring to, but there are two transformers in the picture. The big box one is a Lionel Z, which was the largest transformer Lionel made in the years leading up to WWII, with a rating of 250 watts.

The sort of football shaped one on the right is a ZW, Lionel's classic of the postwar years. It's very similar to the Z internally-the core on the earlier ZWs was identical to the one on the Z, but somewhere along the way was up-rated to 275 watts(the later ones did have a better redesigned core).

Quote

Is the green engine that famous one from Scotland?  I forget the name.

The Flying Scotsman, perhaps? I wish, but alas no. O gauge(Lionel train size) isn't very common in England, and most American modelers don't really go for English trains. I personally love them, but I'm in the minority.

One of the Brass manufacturers imported a really nice Flying Scotsman from England two or three years ago, but the $1400 price tag was too much for this college student to swing.

The engine pictured is a postwar Lionel 2056 that was repainted(not by me) in green. Whoever painted didn't letter it, or really even do all that good of a job for that matter, but I think that they were trying to make it look like one of the Southern Railway's Southern Crescent engines.

It caught my eye, as I've always liked the Southern, and the price was right(especially considering that the 2056 is not-so-common) after a little bit of haggling.

Quote
Have you ever seen replicas (Lionel or otherwise) of the streamliners designed by Henry Dreyfuss and/or Raymond Loewy?  Those make me drool.

Dreyfuss's one big contribution to trains was designing the streamline shrouding for a couple of New York Central Hudson which are, oddly enough, commonly called Dreyfuss Hudsons. There have been several made in O gauge, including a rough model which Lionel made in the prewar years.

Lionel and a few others have made some beautiful 1:48 full scale models in the last few years, but they're pricey and I don't have the room to run full 1:48 scale steam engines. I do, however, have a decent less than scale model made a few years ago by former Lionel competitor K-line. Here it is, pictured with a few other well-known Dreyfuss designs from my personal collection in an old "file photo."

The better known Raymond Loewry design is the GG-1, an electric locomotive which was used on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He also had several other designs for the Pennsylvania.

I don't have any of these, although Lionel and others have made a good many of them in the past couple of years. All of his other PRR designs were for big, flashy steam locomotives(usually novel things that hadn't been tried before, and weren't successful enough for anyone to bother copying). GG-1s have been made by about everyone in every scale, though, as they were a huge success-they were all built in the '30s, and the last couple were finally retired in the early '80s.

I have a GG-1 on the way-a modern reproduction of Lionel's postwar model. It's supposed to be here some time in March, although it will be interesting to see if they actually make that deadline.

Matt, we dug up lots of interesting artifacts in Old Manila, coins, bayonets, rifles, musket balls, bullets, rifle flints, lots of pottery and ceramic shards, bottles, bones but not human bones, etc. We are digging up the part of the ruins of the old curtain wall defense of Intramuros (which means walled city) and Spanish arsenal which was removed and converted into a port during the American Pd.

Ben, Wow you know your trains! The football shaped transformer reminds me of the bomb in the obscure Peter Sellars movie "The Mouse that Roared".

Yep, I was thinking of The Flying Scotsman.  She still runs in Britain, correct?

And yep, your K-Line Dreyfuss Hudson (Twentieth Century Limited) is one of my favorites (the real ones, not the models).  They all got scraped, right? :'(
I loved how Dreyfuss got to design the whole system, from cowlings to interiors down to the tableware.  Darn it, where's my time machine when I need it. :)

The Lionel factory is a stone-throw away from where I live.  I've driven past it a million times but never thought to stop in and see if they have a public exhibit or tour or something.  I heard at one time they were going out of business.

Ben, your stuff is awesome!

HobieSport,
The Scotsman's been operating on and off over the years.

The last I heard, things were tied up with red tape, and they weren't really operating-although the plan was to return it to operation soon.

Dennis,
Lionel hasn't actually made anything at the Chesterfield factory for several years now. I think around 2000 or so was when they went overseas.

Unfortunately, they were the victim of a shifting market. Lionel isn't so much a toy company any more-their big target are adults with big budgets, who unfortunately are very picky and demanding. It wasn't feasible for them to turn out the models that the buyers want(and that other companies were giving them) while remaining price competitive and remain stateside.

They kept their head offices and visitor center at Chesterfield for a while, however the visitor center closed a year or two ago. There's been a push from upper level management to move back to New York, where they started out. Right now, the only thing that's still in Michigan is service, although they recently opened a facility for that in Ohio, and it's expected that everything will soon move there. The last I heard, the Chesterfield building is for sale.

In any case, Lionel did file Chapter 11 a few years ago, but had a solid reason for doing so. That's another story in and of itself. They've just emerged from Chapter 11 recently, and are very healthy again.

Ramil: there are quite a few folks in my town from the Philippines, my school site psychologist for one, and a co-workers lawyer husband for another.  Seems most of the local doctors are now from India or Pakistan or the Philippines as well, and we even have a fair number of folks from the Middle East including a sweet little kid at school from Yemen who's favorite show when she and her family lived there was "Walker: Texas Ranger".   I've had Philippine "dinuguan", or at least that's what the family who made called it, and it was little too exotic for my tastes.

When I was a kid I helped dad put up a new mailbox at our place in the country.  About 3 feet down he found a clay bottle pretty similar to the one you found on your dig in Manila.

Ben:  nice trains!  Really like the old transformers, never seen anything like that.  My son model railroads in N scale, he likes to buy Kato stuff from Japan, pricey but well made.  I had a Lionel O scale set when I was a kid, but it was just a normal plastic deal from the early 70s so I'm sure it was not worth much, and  when I was younger I had an HO scale layout but again, it was nothing to write home about.  You have some very interesting rolling stock on your layout, and your equipment is mega cool what with those antique transformers.

McHeath, so you're living in a multi-cultural community. The "dinuguan", yup its a local delicacy and kinda exotic from the Philippines and I like it very much. The clay bottles, do you still keep it? we've done a research before about it and we found out that it was used as ink bottles, they were manufactured by Carters Ink Company from Boston, I'm not so sure if that company still exists. Some Carters' Ink bottles found its way on eBay, here's one:

My mom still has that bottle, it has no markings of any kind and looks to be pretty old.  This area was not settled until the 19th century really, the American Indians were here of course but they never made bottles like these.  The Spanish and later Mexicans more or less just passed through the Central Valley, seeing it as a desert with little use, major settlement here only goes back to the 1850s.

Ben, I didn't know all that about the Chesterfield plant.  As I said, I thought I had heard some talk about them going out of business.  The sign is still out front on the 21 Mile Road side.

I guess I should have done some research.  Here is an article from the Detroit News from 2001.  There a couple of good photos here:

Title: Re: What else do you guys collect? Old Toys
Post by: winkydink on January 15, 2009, 07:19:10 AM
I finally had a chance to take a picture or two of my other hobby, Old Toys, and vintage electronic games.

My collection is mostly vintage 1960's (basically toys that I was familar with from the realms of my own childhood).  A couple of examples are shown below.

The first is a couple of "Thingmaker" sets from the mid 1960.  MiniDragons and Picadoos.  These were of the same genre as the Creepy Crawler sets.  You poured Plastigoop into molds, heated them up in a "Thingmaker" and the would harden.  With the Mini Dragon's set you could put then together in an almost unlimited fashion.

The next item are a pair of vintage Mattel pull string talking toys.  The first is a Mr Ed talking hand puppet.  The second is a Casper the friendly Ghost doll.  Both these items had voice boxes that had a small record with about a dozen sayings.  You pull the string and you randomly get one of the sayings.  Mr Ed says "Who ever heard of a talking horse", or "Horsefeathers" and the like.  Casper says things like, "I'm a friendly Ghost", "Will you be my friend?", etc.

This is the same technology as the old see-and say pull string toys.  Additionally Mattel actually used this technology (plastic records), on a phone toy that they sold in the mid to late 1960's.  Unfortunately, I don't have one of these (but I will enclose a picture).

Lastly, I collect old video game systems and old hand held systems.  I show a picture of part of my hand held collection.  One item in the collection is actually pretty interesting it is call Microvision.

Microvision was the first hand held game with interchangable cartridges.  It beat the game boy by 10 years.  It was introduced in 1979.  It had a production run from 79 to 82 and about 15 games were produced.  What was really interesting was the fact that the CPU was not in the unit itself, it was rather on the game.  Boy that must have been expensive to do.  Anyway it was ahead of it's time and like most things ahead of it's time it did not fair too well.

Neat stuff!  I particularly like your thingmaker sets, neither of which do I remember.  I had the original Creepy Crawlers (made bugs, spiders, etc.) and I also had one called "Creeple People"...remember that?!  It was a strange one, where you made the head, feet and arms of various generic zombie-type creatures, and attached them to a pencil.  (the pointed end would be supported by the feet, the arms would slip over the pencil, and the head was attached to the eraser end)  I never had it, but do you remember the "Incredible Edibles"?  I don't remember what the molds made, but it had edible Plastigoop... that had to be nasty!  :P
(I also had the green hand-held football game you have pictured...I've got much better games then that on my Blackberry!)

And remember taking Silly Putty and making a transfer of someones face off of a newspaper photo and then stretching and distorting it in fits of insane laughter? Ah, those were the days.  Oh. Wait. It was just me?  Er. Nevermind.

I never could get the Slinky Spring to get down all the basement steps though. Childhood trauma there.

I guess I was easily amused.  We had a big lazy susan and we'd put it in the middle of the floor, load it with marbles, and spin it faster and faster until all the marbles went flying and rolling all over.  Yep.  That would explain when I first started loosing my marbles...

Clearly you were a wild child.  Today's kids are a lot safer to have in the house, they are usually just glued in front of the video gaming console and not scattering little round glass balls all over the floor to kill unsuspecting adults or passersby.  Or sending coiled springs of death down the stairs to yet again trap the unsuspecting and innocent adults.

Actually my older brother was the dangerous one.  Him with his thick glasses and fully stocked chemistry set down in the basement.  He learned how to make slow burning fuses with salt-peter soaked yarn.  We had a natural gas tap in the basement.  So my genius brother decided it might be "neat" to fill a huge dry-cleaning bag with gas, attach a few match-heads on a fuse and let it drift up into the night sky over our otherwise peaceful little town.  We all watched, fidgeting with excitement.  When it lit it propelled itself into a HUGE slowly revolving ball of flame.  The next day at school there were multiple confirmed UFO reports but we didn't let on and had great new respect for our brother.

Unfortunately the next week, hoping for a repeat performance, he did the same thing, but this time it just drifted over into the neighbors apple tree and exploded.

Unfortunately, by the time of my youth, chemistry sets were pretty tame.

I've made up for it, though, since I have ready access to a room full of chemicals and another of glassware-all with professor permission, of course.

Now I get to take part in things like this

Cool!  So that's what they teach in college these days?

Is nitrogen triiodide what is otherwise known as contact explosive?  Our hometown neighbor made some and coated the family driveway with it.  Nice big bang when his parent's drove in and left black smoking tire tracks.

Another of my brothers' many dangerous pet projects was his beloved carbide cannon with six foot barrel and mousetrap trigger that shot 3/4 inch ball bearings across the gully at an unsuspecting pine tree with a big cloud of pollen at impact.

Plus the usual stuff with M80s and cherry bombs and a few skyrockets we smuggled from Mexico...Can you imagine getting away this that kind of thing these days?  Ah, the innocence of childhood with high explosive back-up in the late 1960s, when boys were boys and the neighbors were all nervous.

There is also a picture of a mint Incredible Edible set that still contains the sealed "edible" goop.  Yum Yum  :D

Yes, NI3 is a contact explosive.

It's really quite dramatic when enough of it goes off. When it explodes, it decomposes into nitrogen gas and iodine vapor, the latter of which  make a big purple cloud. Unfortunately, it also stains.

NI3 won't explode when it's wet, so an old trick around here is to lay some down wet inside the door of the lecture hall. On time students will be able to step on it without a problem, but the late students will be greeted by a bang. Unfortunately, doing so leaves brown stains on the floor that won't come off, so the housekeeping staff frowns on such "experiments."

Never had a carbide cannon, although we've serious discussed buying one for the chemistry department. They're a lot of fun from what I understand.

Here in Kentucky, you can't even buy firecrackers. Perhaps it's safer, but sure takes away a lot of fun. Of course, most of the neighboring states do legally allow the sale of firecrackers and rockets.

No one around ever goes out of state to buy fireworks, though  :)

Here in Cawleefournya you can't even legally think about firecrackers.  If you do you will be sent away for all three strikes at once and end up rooming with 7 guys in an 8 X 10 cell.  4 of those guys will be Norteno gangstas, 2 will be Surenos, and 1 will be a convinced Wallstreet leverage broker.  And that's just for merely thinking about firecrackers, if you actually have one you are in even more trouble.  And ROCKETS!?  Ohmigawd that one would land you about 9 million years down in Corcoran shining Charles Manson's shoes.  Why our "Sparklers" that we can buy here are more of "fizzers" as they took away all the sparkle because someone got hurt and sued.  A few years ago they took away all the schoolkids desks that have opening tops because a kid in LA pinched his hands.  (Not making that up)  You also can't give a kid in school any homemade cookies from dear old mom as someone got sick a few years ago and sued and now all food served in schools must be store bought.

Meanwhile I do all my evil scientist moments where I create gooey artificial plastic life while wearing a sweater vest and tie.  One must be civil about such things.

OOOH!  Explosions!  I saw a potato gun once - let's see ... it was a 2" I.D. PVC pipe, maybe 2' long, with larger piece maybe 6" long sealed to one end, and a pvc screw cap on the back end of that.  Then make a little hole in the larger pipe section (here my imagination and knowledge break down - I'm sure some of you folks know how to do this part) and insert a stem with a knurled thingie on the outside to turn with the fingers and a flint-and-steel out of a lighter or whatever on the inside.  So, you shove a nice, symmetrical, russet potato down the 2" barrel, maybe halfway, then you unscrew the back end, spray in some hair spray and reseal the back chamber.  Then you spin the lighter-flint mechanism, and the fumes explode and the potato flies into the woods and everyone cheers.

As for my collections - New England electric clocks, odd bits of natural materials, and aloe plants (just a few right now).  The little rocks are slag out of the Revolutionary War era iron furnaces in northwest Connecticut, collected out of the Housatonic River and then tumbled:

My dad and I are into everything, but really we have a very large Brewery Collection, specifying in Pabst and especially Pre-Prohibiton Pabst Items. I 'll have to get some pics.  The collection consumes most of our 3600 square foot home.

We also collect cars, including a 1952 Ford F-2 Truck, 1957 Chevy 210 4-door, a 1980 Corvette Stingray, and I have a 1958 Chevy Delray 4-door, I plan to build into a 50's era mild custom.

We collect Confederate Civil War memorobilia and have swords flags, and even a Jacket from Robert E. Lee's army.

I guess we do just a bit of everything.  Antiques sums it up well LOL.

Title: What Else Do You Guys Collect - Volume II
Post by: Dennis Markham on February 21, 2009, 11:09:41 AM
I started a new thread on this topic because posting after all those great shots of Tom's cars and trucks is a hard act to follow.

I don't collect old bottles but I happened on one back in the summer of 2006.  While snorkeling in a small bay on Lake St Clair (pronounced Saint Clair) north of Detroit I found this old beer bottle.  During weekends this bay is "wall-to-wall" with boats.  It's a big party spot where people anchor in relatively shallow water and socialize.  I like to go on Monday when no one is there and snorkel, finding all kinds of junk from plastic beads, sun glasses and anything those with too much alcohol on board (their bodies) tend to drop.

Connected to the Lake is the shipping channel that runs from Lake Erie all the way up to Lake Superior.  The channel to the south becomes the Detroit River and separates the U.S. and Canada.  The current is strong.

So I find this beer bottle and bring it to the boat. I can tell right way that it's old.  Although things in this bay get covered with silt rather quickly, this bottle is so clean it looks like someone just threw it in yesterday.

In raised letters it reads Detroit Br'g Co.  I don't know how long the Detroit Brewery has been out of business but it's been a long time.  When I got home I searched on-line and found a web site of a collector that specializes in memorabilia from the Detroit Brewing Co.  I sent him an e-mail and he replied that I had quite a find.  He estimated that bottle to have been used pre-prohibition, prior to 1917.  Detroit went into Prohibition 3 years prior to the rest of the US in 1920.  He went on to say that it was more than likely NOT before 1900 but could be from anytime after 1900 up to the Prohibition.

I still can't get over how clean it was for having been on the bottom for 90 years or more when some fisherman may have tossed it in back at the turn of the 20th Century.   I'm not the only person that snorkels there so it hadn't been in the bay long. The strong currents of the shipping channel must have had that bottle rolling around all these years......no moss grows on a rolling stone.

It's not worth much...I saw one with a lot of 6 other various brands of bottles for a buck and a half on eBay.  But I like it.

Yes, this is almost guaranteed before 1900.  This has a top for a Crown bottle cap, instead of a blob top, which would be cork sealed.  The crown bottle cap was invented in 1893.  Even the big names in breweries such as Pabst, didn't use them until 1906.  So, it's safe to say that it's probably from a time around there or until Michigan went into prohibition in 1917.  Lovely bottle, I'll have to post the brewery photos soon!

An interesting story about why that Pabst sign is special because of its 1958 Vintage.  That was the first year of the red stripe on the label, which symbolized their 10-millionth barrell.  They still use it today, and the label has changed very little in the past 51 years.

Greg, nice article and nice collection.  Living here in Detroit Goebel beer was common.  I don't even remember when it disappeared.  If someone were to ask me I'd probably have said it was still in existence.  I always thought it was related to the comedian George Gobel but that doesn't seem likely, or is it?  I'm sure George came long after the beer was first introduced.   People used to call it "joe-bell" which sounded fancier than Goebel (Go-bul).

I know it was available into the mid 80s here in S/E MI. I spent many a weekend night juiced on that stuff :P

I collect vintage radios, Jukeboxes, Phones, Trains, and items from my childhood, of whichhg I still have many from when I was 4 and 5 years old.
Dennis;
Interesting bottle. Years ago, while panning for gold in the San Bernardino River, with My Dad, I found a very old Coke bottle, well maybe 50's. It still was full of Coke. Someone must have set it in the cold water, and lost one, But this bottle was almost completely smooth from being in the moving water, only on the upriver side. So I figure it must have been in the same position for years.
I would tend to think your bottle was buried and recently uncovered by current, rather than roilling down river for 90 years. I think it would have suffered the same effect of water and sand moving by it that my Bottle did.

Dan, your Coke bottle sounds interesting.  Is the City and State still embossed on the bottom of the bottle?  They were marked with the City where they were manufactured.  When I was a kid my buddies and I would all buy a bottle of Coke out of a machine.  The person with the City/State on the bottom that was closest to where we were had to buy everyone's "pop".

I agree with what you said about that old beer bottle.  It must have been under sand and stuff for all of those years.  What finally brought it up is anyone's guess.

I no longer have the bottle, I gave it to my dad, he collected some bottles, I think after he passed away, my Mom got rid of it.
My Mom has thrown out some rather amazing items since my dad passed away, and I keep tell her to let me see things before you toss them..
She threw out a pack of War Issued Lucky Strike Cigarettes in the Green and red Pack, A 6 pack of Korean war Era Bennies. Given to the soldiers to keep them going. They were Aspirin sized tablets mounted in a bubble type pack and in a brown GI sleeve. But the Worst one was  Regency 22 volt Transistor radio My dad bought for her in 1958 yellow plastic, she threw it out because she couldn't find batteries for it. It's worth perhaps 2 to 3 thousand dollars now. the thing about it, she knows I collect Vintage Transistor radios, Yet she still threw it out. Getting old is not fun I guess.

Ah, D/P I share your pain.  My mom tosses vintage stuff with a passion, many a tear has been brought to me eye.  I've started just flat out asking for things that I want, because there is not much of the vintage stuff left and at 79 years of age she shows no sign of stopping throwing it out.

I need to look into getting a metal lathe and a small milling machine in the future so I can do my own repairs on these lighters. Most of the ones that can be found cheaply are missing the wand, and they need the spark wheel sharpened or replaced.

Hmmmm
Actually I don't like to admit I'm collecting stuff, but it tends to come in a lot of phones, and liquid fuel camp stoves Grin

It's not the collection who is the important thing, it is the fettling, using and understanding of such great art.

Now the rotary has became modern, and I may use it over internet as a Cnet member. I'm just waiting for the magnetos to be modern again Grin

So yes, I'm probably a collector.

To answer the original question, I will list what else I collect. I will not bore you with photos of most, unless someone wants them. My list is as follows:
  Railroad kerosene lanterns
  Railroad manuals and other items
Kerosene (oil) lamps. Some I use
   Dietz kerosene lanterns
Old computers. I have a TRS 80 and Kaypro CPM, Kaypro XT. Both Kaypros are listed as "portable". I
also have an IBM XT. There are a few more older ones too.
Old CB radios, both base and mobile.
I have a couple of old tube AM radios. One is a cabinet radio made by the Fried corp (or Freid. I'm not
sure how it is spelled and the radio is in storage).
Ford Rangers. We have three, 91, 93 and 99.
   Guns
   Military uniforms and equipment

ADD: Doug's post about the EXIT sign reminded me, I also collect porcelain light fixtures and old electrical
    switch and plug wallplates.

I am sure I forgot something. It's nice to have two houses.    Jim

Speaking of railroad kerosene lanterns, I have an Adlake non-sweating lamp with the four fresnel lenses (green and red) and a kerosene burner inside.  Big, heavy lump, it is.  Some of these that I see have big reflector plates around each lens, and others have two, while still others have none (like mine).  Are they all supposed to have those big reflectors and mine are missing, or were some used without the reflectors?

Sounds like a switch lantern. I am not sure about the reflectors. There are sites that might be of some help. There is Railrodiana Online for one. I know there are others, as I have been on them. Sorry I couldn't be more help.      Jim

m1898 that's a cool lantern collection!  I have only a couple of such lanterns, one of which my dad and I caught while fishing many years ago.  Dad thought he had a big ol' fightin' Bass fish, his line was bent over and he was having to work it hard to land it in our little boat.  We had a good laugh when it broke the surface and was an almost new Coleman lantern.  Probably had not been in the lake for more than a few days at most, and it still works.

Thank you McHeath. Lanterns, like old telephones, seem to multiply. I also have over a dozen kerosene railroad lanterns and well over 40 kerosens (oil) lamps, including the one that belonged to my grandma. Yes, I am originally from Michigan ; )          Jim

I'm not sure what I collect... :) Just stuff i find interesting I suppose. It varies a lot in my case but the trend seems to focus on phone/vintage electrical things and vintage games/toys.

PS: about the lanterns. No one would happen to have an extra pump for the 2 lamps I have (see pictures) they always go for more than I care to pay for on ebay. :)

I collect way too many things...  Arcade Games, Typewriters, Furniture, Glass Pitchers, anything Mid Century Modern.  Basically anything old.  The worst collection is the cars though, they take up too much room  :D

The current fleet is: 1978 Chrysler LeBaron Coupe, 1986 Dodge Aries Coupe, 1986 Dodge 600 Convertible, 1986 Plymouth Reliant Wagon, 1987 Chrysler LeBaron Sedan, 1991 Chrysler Imperial and a 1993 Chrysler Imperial. (And I'm looking at another car right now...  ;D )

The 1978 LeBaron is my favorite, I'm installing the head from a late 70's era car phone setup tomorrow.  :D

The Convertible is runner up for most fun.

They look like curb feelers (a.k.a cat whiskers)  from here. Of course, still available at your Amazon store.

No I think he ran over "Uncle Martin" when he was parking!

If I had anywhere at all to keep more cars, I'd be in real trouble. So I make do with my subscription to "Collectible Automobile". It is a lot easier to store and consumes much less time over all.

I think it was a mid 90's one and well beyond saving for road use though...  :D

Oil lamps.  The older and more decorative, the better.  I don't want the new stuff, I love the old ones with colored chimneys and unique bases.  I hate when I type in 'vintage' all these things from the 70s to today pop up and I don't consider that 'vintage'.  That's newer stuff that's a dime a dozen for the most part, so I've learned to enter 'antique'.

What I love about having oil lamps around is that there are times I just have oil lamps lit around the house for the night, nothing electric.  It provides great ambiance.  On the occasion when the lights go out, my house is lit up really nice in every room and confuses my neighbors who think I have power.

I also collect Steelers stuff.  Old items from the 70s and older.  I even will pick up some Pirate memorabilia and have some great posters of times gone by when they were World Series champs back in the early 1900s.  These all go into my Steelers/Pens/Pirates room.

I live in Pittsburgh, so that isn't off the mark at all.  I've been there, but need to go again.  They also do tours of Heinz Field and I took one to get down into the Steelers locker room as well.  There is so much history in my hometown.  Pittsburgh was one of the epicenters of immigration and the whole industrial age at the turn of the 20th century.  There's so many things here to see.  I'm glad you made it Dennis and I'm sure, knowing the Pirates latest history (and why I refuse to add that stuff to my collection), you enjoyed a win.  Great park huh?  I love living here and after living in many other places?  I can whole heartily say that!

I collect almost anything vintage. It started with radios, tvs and phones. Now includes large appliances. Here are a couple pics of my collections.

My radio/tv room.

One of my jukeboxes. I have another identical, but in black. It is a 1956 AMi

Some of my larger appliances. The first one up is my 1963 Lady Kenmore Washer/Dryer. Both work great. I was using them regularly, but switched for a bit.

1954 Frigidaire washer/dryer. They both work, but the washer has a slight leak.

These are both dryers. The one on the right is a 1958 Frigidaire and the one on the left is a 1957 Lady Kenmore. I'm currently working on the 57 Lady K, and the 58 I'm having an issue with it dryer. No heat.

Whitcrane, somewhere in my pantry closet I think I still have the Coca-Cola cup from 1985 that I first tasted "New Coke" in. It may not be any different than any other cup from that era, but it has a distinct memory for me. I have at times had a small drink bottle collection, from back in the days when I mined glass for recycling in high school in the 1970s. I live near Owens-Illinois and they would buy glass by the truckload and recycle it. I kept out all the unusual drink bottles for myself. But it's nothing like the collection you have. It was nice to see. Thanks for posting it.

There was an Owens-Illinois plant in my hometown.  As opposed to taking glass for recycling, there were numerous dump areas across the town that had all kinds of bowling ball sized chunks of glass of many different colors.  We lived in Indiana and had a cottage in Michigan by a lake and my mother wanted to make a rock garden.  I put one of those chunks in the trunk and she didn't want to have it in her yard.  I rolled it down the 50 ft. bank and down in the lake, about 3 ft. deep and forgot it.  The next summer we went to eat at the best restaurant in town and found that chunk in a glass case with a newspaper story about a meteorite that our neighbor stumbled across while fly fishing.  My stepfather saw it and nearly died laughing and described in very earthy terms how it was a chunk of a frozen glass batch from Owens-Illinois in Gas City Indiana.  The owners were mortified to say the least.  He said it was allowed to harden because someone had fallen in it and couldn't be used for containers.  That really put the seal on the deal!

I don't quite consider myself a collector of these, but I do like old Mortice/Skeleton keys. Found these two bunches this morning for the equivalent of $3 at a Vide Grenier. My house has a few keys missing from their old locks and although unlikely to fit, these will be tried out just for the fun of it.

Before being placed with others I have, it is an opportunity to try out a rust removal/metal restoration via Teleplay's Molasses bath method.

CJ, nice keys, I have a small collection myself but, mine are of the smaller verity like handcuff and cabinet keys of the skeletal type.
I also use to collect about everything under the sun when the money was still flowing. Here a collection of "Attachment plugs" dating from the early years of electricity to about the 20's if memory serves me right. And then of course there were fans and small appliances and it just kept on going with, well you name it. Till one day it all got sold off one by one.

Being raised in Michigan,  and growing up with a family that ran a snowmobile racing magazine and is heavily involved in Vintage Snowmobiles,  I collect unqiue vintage snowmobiles.

I have my Grandpas 1971 Yamaha GP396,   a 73 Raider 34TT and a 74 Arctic Cat Lynx 295 Wankel.,

First pic is my old Polcat,  on the left,  it was a 73 Arctic Cat Lynx with a big mouth hood and a 440 polaris engine with a hacked up straight pipe,  Was a rat rod and rode it till the drive cogs disentegrated at an event. had a whole 50 bucks into that sled.   The green thing next to it was an old 74 Panther VIP. hydrostatic drive,  won the butt ugliest sled 2 years in a row at an event.

My grandpas 71 Yamaha GP396 right after the restoration.  This is the only one in the collection that is pristine.   My grandma sold it in the late 70s after my grandpa had a stroke.  Im at a swap meet and go oooh a gp396,  bought it,  pulled out the old track to put a new one in.  lookin gunder the tunnel was my grandpas initials and drivers license number and old address engraved in it.  She came back to the family

My 73 Raider 34TT 340CC twin track built right in Capac michigan.  Its a blast to ride not  so much fun to get unstuck in deep snow though :P

My 74 Lynx 295cc Wankel,  rotary motor.   This one i nabbed at a swap meet for 50 bucks.  and got it home,  bpassed the kill switch and she fired right up.  The engine is made by Sachs,  they also made a 303 wankel and rotariy motors for lawn mowers.

And the last pic is of me on the end on the Kitty kat when i was just a young one.  Right on the track.  I still race now and then in the vintage races.  Its alot of fun.

I also collect oddball unix systems.   I have a Tandy 6000HD which needs a new hard drive for it.  they have a SD card adapter for it but its above my pay grade lol.   Was the first computer used to send and recieve email in my county
