Wow what a deal, a plastic crosley repro pay phone for $500....I wonder if any one would pay that for a crosley pay phone.

They must have mis-typed that, it should be $5.00....

Was discussed a bit ago on the forum.

What is listed for $500 now is a Thomas America Corp "Classic Edition" plastic payphone made in China. It has 10 buttons but their newer models have 12 buttons. Maybe a ten button plastic payphone is worth a few bucks more, don't know. The Crosley "Replica" has 12 buttons, probably also made in China, and has the name Crosley at the bottom of the front information card.

A Classic Edition phone discussed at this link sold for $33 plus $18 shipping

http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=10274.msg109405#msg109405

and a prior sale saw a Classic Edition go for $170 plus $20 shipping. Go figure.

You can find them are various retail stores, the Crosley that is, including Target which has them for $69.99

http://www.target.com/p/crosley-1950s-classic-pay-phone-black/-/A-749739

There is a NIB Classic Edition up on eBay right now for a BIN price of $89.99 plus $14 shipping

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NIB-THOMAS-REPICA-EDITION-COIN-OPERATED-3-SLOT-PAY-PHONE/121284642173

or if you can handle a used one, you can BIN for $75.00 plus $15 shipping.

There seems to be a market for these but not in the $500 range.

Now, I'd say that's about all anyone would every want or need to know about these other than to point out the delusional sellers that put them up on eBay periodically.

They're often seen for sale here in the UK too, I even saw one on an antiques show on TV in one of those artsy fartsy montage segways between clips, but usually they're never more than £50, unless they're from someone who thinks they have the real deal... ;D

The most sad thing is, there is "1 watcher."

Ben,

Some people, including me at times but not in this case, watch these outliers to see if they actually sell, or for whatever other reasons.

I did a search for just "classic" in telephones and counted 65 either Crosley or Thomas America phones for sale right now on eBay.

The search for "classic payphone" came up with 54 so some of the phones on eBay must not use "payphone" in the searchable titles. Prices range from about $80 plus shipping to $120 including shipping, on average.

Here's a deal compared to the used $500 phone still for sale but with 2 (two!) offers. Just posted with a BIN price of $199.99, and FREE SHIPPING to boot. And,  it's brand new, too.    ;)

With so many on eBay under $100, one wonders how a seller (granted, it's the seller's first eBay listing) comes up with this price. Or is it kind of like the seller buying a lottery ticket?

Well, if the phone BOOTH is included, with free shipping, that's a great deal even if it is a Crosley replica!

I noticed that and when I went looking for similar listings, I also noticed that a lot of Crosley payphones for sale had the very same listing heading, had the word "booth" in them. People who don't know phones are just copying another listing heading and using it for their phone. I can buy that for if someone thinks a $70 phone will sell for $200, or much less $500, then they don't know much about phones and would use another seller's incorrect listing title. Wonder what the seller would do if one were to buy the phone and after it was delivered ask the seller where the booth is, when will it be delivered . . .  ;D

IMO people like that who are too lazy to do the research deserve to have rare gems pass through their hands for chump change (and deserve to be told so after the fact).

Unfortunately, most of the time they end up doing the opposite; trying to sell junk for gem prices.
