OK, going through my collection, I find 3 211's and 2 212's... now which way is the proper orientation for the switch Hook/Dial. should the switch hook be in the front, on to the side? Left, or right side? or just leave it the way it is????

There are several possible positions besides the left, right, or facing front. If you mount the 211 on the side of a desk, for example, you would probably want the dial at 45 degrees, not 90 or 180. However, facing front is not recommended, because it is easy for someone to accidentally hang up when attempting to dial.

I have always thought that it depended on phone placement. The dial turret on some models has many "settings"  so the dial can be rotated to suit the subscriber.
