New forum members are very welcome and encouraged to take a guess. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

Listed a few hours ago in a 10 day auction with a reserve and starting at a minimal $9.99 is what appears to be the opposite end of the "red 302" spectrum from Auction Contest 211. Within 25 minutes of being listed, the first bid was placed and it met the reserve. That bid was $99.00 so makes one wonder what the reserve price was for this phone (must have been $99 because the first bid has been exposed as $125 but it showed up on the bid list as $99, jumped from the opening asked bid of $9.99 to $99 with only one bid being placed). This phone seems to be a very nice 1954  red 302 and it will sell but once again, for how much? This should be an another interesting auction to watch and to see who can guess closest to the selling price.

NOTE: we will use a $5 gap rule between guesses again to prevent crowding. As such, keep your guess at least $5 away from prior guesses for this contest.

The eBay seller listed it as an "VINTAGE WESTERN ELECTRIC RED MODEL 302 DESK TELEPHONE " with the item condition as "Used" and " - - - " and with the auction listing description saying  "Western Electric Red Model 302, all original and in very nice condition with an F1 handset and red colored Thermoplastic plastic housing that dates from 1954. Most 302s were black and of the colors, ivory was the most popular at the time, representing 70% of sales.  This makes red a more rarer color. The housing is original red colored plastic, not painted or a reproduction.  It is clean and shiny and has no yellowing or discoloration.  There looks to be a short hairline crack on the handset handle, but does not affect strength due to the extremely strong tenite plastic.  Handset caps are in excellent condition. The dial turns freely and returns promptly.  The fabric cords are original, not reproduction cords.  The cord length is a little over 12 feet from the phone to the wall. This is a nice, clean telephone to add to your collection for display and one of the nicest red 302s around."

I was impressed with the statement

This makes red a more rarer color.

Now I am glad I have a couple of them, lol.
But I guess, that makes it not the rarest, yet.

The phone is a distributing center refurbishment, which is indicated by the stamping, but can also be guessed by the mixture of dates.  The 5J dial is no younger than November 1952.  The handset appears to be from September 1950.  The shell is reported from 1954.
But dates matching or not does not seem to bother buyers of these sets, so I would go by the condition of the shell, which appears good.  We saw this week that breakage of the shell can drop the price to below $100 (see 302G'M'-20 modular conversion set), although I have myself bought a badly cracked set for almost $200. Are buyers more discriminating now?

With a day and 7 hours to go, this auction has attracted 9 actual bidders, and who knows how many snipers. That's a lot of interest so the final few seconds should be interesting. So, 7 or less hours to get any final guesses in on the contest.

Low bidding is useful for bookmarking too of worthwhile candidates, so one doesn't run into the low limit of only 200 items in the watch list.
And if no one else bids against it in the end, perhaps you got a good deal.
