I am redoing an AE 34 whose original wiring was gone when purchased.  I bought replacement cords whose colors don' t match the originals per the diagrams.  Additionally, the receiver cord has 4 wires, red, green, yellow, and black that I am trying to match to the L1, L2, and GRD terminals.  Another question is whether I should be able to hear a dial tone if the handset is wired correctly but I haven't connected to the base?  I realize this is probably elementary to some, but I have to start learning somewhere.  Thanks in advance.

You can use 3 of the 4 wires to wire the handset.look at base terminals R= receiver, T= Transmitter, C=common -other sides of rec and trans are tied together.L1 and L2 are for line cord. , polaraty does not matter. If a ringer wire is on gnd treminal, move it to L2. you cant get dial tone if not plugged in

I'll recheck and was aware of having to plug in for dial tone.  Thanks for the response.
