No, don't ask what its for, line testing I guess.

Will no doubt find out as it comes with a manual included, I think this what GPO guys called a "megger" as it ranges to thousands of ohms, I guess the faulty line is hooked up and by process of elimination through the ohmmeter they could make a determination as to where the cable(s) were broken.

What will I use it for?

Who cares, it looks fantastic!

PS - would it be worthwhile opening a new section of the forum for test or ancilliary equipment, like this or AVO meters or headsets?

by taking a ohms reading & multiplying by the appropriate constant, you can determine the distance to the fault. reading the instructions on the lid, i can see this meter also has a restive fault locate function. i can give more detail on the procedures, if anybody wants to know.

Thank you very much for that teka-bb, clears it up a bit.

NOW, if anyone wants a insulation test done they know where to post their phones to, I will do it for nothing but cant guarantee safe return!

bwanna, this is what I tried to say (ineptly) in first post, I'm not really that technical so will be in touch with you when I start fiddling about with it!

That's a beautiful piece of equipment.  It looks practically new.  8)

The bloke described it as "used" but think it has been refurbished, also described as fullly tested and working, the lable would seem to indicate it was refurb and sitting on a shelf as more compact, newer testers were available.

Wonder what bwanna uses these days, probably size of a mobile phone?

I have a few Megger's in the collection. Here are a few pictures of my oldest one. It's very big and heavy:

A Megger doesn't need any (external/battery) power. Power is created by the internal hand generator. Your ohm meter is different from a Megger and requires batteries.

Amazing, put bog standard 9V battery in and whilst I was trying the functions, put 500V through my right hand, I dropped the croc clips pretty darn quick, but as I'm sure you know its the amps that kill you not the volts, hooked it up on my bakelite GPO voltmeter and voila - 500V exactly.

I need to refresh my secondary school Physics "O" Grade.
