Title: What do you like about The Classic Rotary Phone Forum?
Post by: Phonesrfun on October 04, 2009, 09:39:47 PM
One thing I really like about this forum is that it is pretty much free from the bickering that goes on in other forums.  I certainly hope that even with increased membership, this forum can stay at a nice, friendly level!

i have perused other forums in the past, but none ever interested me until i found this place. i enjoy the friendly banter and of course have learned a TON. i appreciate that those with the knowledge don't patronize us rookies when we ask silly questions. ;D

i definitely feel like i have many friends here. ;)

Seconded.

Like to take this opportunity to thank all on here who have taken the time to respond to my sometime long-winded diatribes.

Yeah I agree, a noticeable lack of snide comments and mean spirited bickering seems to be the norm for our little phonelandia.

It's pretty enjoyable.

It is a good bunch of people that pass through these halls.  Thanks to all of you for making it such a nice place to visit.  I get a lot of e-mail from my other site (even though I've neglected it and haven't put up many new posts) from people asking questions.  In my answers to them I refer them here, inviting them to join in the conversation.  Many just have one question and want to get their phone working but some have an interest in maybe another phone, or tips on cleaning, etc.  Before you know it we'll have them hooked like we are!

I must fully agree.
Even from day one, I never felt I was being talked down to. A very pleasent experience, and very unique, to online forums.
Thanks everyone...

Bwanna, there ain't a soul here that would patronize you - you're a pole climber for the phone company. That's automatic status   ;) .

I do agree with everyone here, this is a pleasant place to be. It's full of colorful characters from all over the place and from all walks of life. Also, there's no retarded arguments taking place here which is also a major plus. Heck, I can even overlook the fact that most here are Western Electric lovers  :o  :-X  .

Yup.  The main reason I won't renew my membership in one of the major phone collecting orgs, I won't say which one because I don't want to start a bashing thread, but their forum (the official one, but the Yahoo group isn't any better) is horrible, I've learned much more here in a shorter time and had more fun doing so!

OK, so since we are all so nice and agreeable, let's start talking about politics, sex, money and religion!

My answers are Green, yes, no and maybe.

No, no, let's talk about phones, dogs, ducks and desks.

Thanks to everyone; you have been helpful, funny, supportive, knowledgeable, and I am glad Hobie invited me back in.

Another happy  member here in England.
This by far and away the most welcoming forum I've come across.

I don't post very often but I always enjoy reading the posts almost every day.

If someone had told me back in the mid 1990s I'd be communicating with people from all over the US, Canada, Europe and the Philippines, I'd would've thought they were loony. I'm glad to be here amongst all of you. Like Ramil said, though most of us haven't met in person, it does feel like we are one big family.

I like BBQ Hot Links, Chicken, and maybe a good Steak., a Fresh garden salad, all the popular dressings, Sans the radishes, Plenty of Potato salad, Macaroni salad, and BBQ beans, a selection of dips and chips, and Diet Coke. For desert, a selection of pies, a couple cakes, and 5 gallons of assorted flavors Ice cream, And throw in a watermelon.  Did I miss much ???

Beer?
Title: Re: What do you like about The Classic Rotary Phone Forum?
Post by: Dennis Markham on October 08, 2009, 01:13:12 PM
That sounds good Dan. I'm in for that.  But we better wait a little longer than May unless you want to wear a jacket at the BBQ.  You can't count on warm weather until after the 2nd week of June.  Then you have to hurry because by September it's cold again.

The person that travels the farthest gets the spare bedroom.  The rest of you will have to pitch a tent or hit the Motel 6.  Macaroni salad is one of my specialties.

beer would be good, too.

I didn't forget the Beer, just figured Dennis could furnish all the other stuff, we can bring our own Beer, or buy it local. Do they sell Miller lite in Michigan?................and Jack.

Now we need to go to Dennis's website to pick the door prizes.
June is fine, school is out, and we can bring all the kids too. :o
Dennis, look into popping for one of those jumpers for the kids, maybe a big airslide also.

Next we can plan for Ramils house in the Phillipines. Since he'll be hosting, he can make travel arrangements, and pay a portion of the airfare.

I would gladly volunteer to hold the next one here, but My association frowns on large gatherings.

P.S. I don't live in an association.

What on earth is a johnny cake?
How about we butcher a  hog, throw it on a rotisserie and let it roast overnight while we drink a few, listen to some music play some bourre and tell lies? I'd be willing to go all the way to the Philippines for that.  8)  8)  8)

Johnny cake, in my family, is white corn meal, pour boiling water over it, wait a while, add some milk, then fry in little thin flat cakes.  Just the thing for scrawny puritan-minded people.  Kind of the opposite of a pig roast, which I also enjoy.  Everyone's recipe is different, and what kind of corn is important, too.  My Dad keeps telling me (2 years now) how Whit Davis's corn meal doesn't make good johnny cakes.  Yeah, yeah.  I make them for family nostalgia once a decade or so.  I also make springerle.   German cookies, very beautiful; also kind of puritan-minded.  I sense a theme.  We eat watermelon with spoons.   No salt. Sometimes we cut it with a sword, though.

If you image-google "johnny cake", ours is nothing like those!

how do you pronounce bourre?

Bwanna, its pronounced boo-ray, it's quite simple and fun. After a few hands most people catch on quite well and soon develope their own strategy. I just read about this Euchre game since I have never heard of it before. If you can understand Euchre, bourre should be no problem at all. Yes I do live in the Acadiana region. The arrow points to my town.

Been to Louisiana a couple times back in the early 90's, had some familia living in Slidell and also in Metairie.  We were living in central Texas at the time.  It was quite the experience, in Slidell if you went out to the back fence and opened the gate it was swamp as far as you could see.  Just amazing to someone with my central Calif semi-desert upbringing.  Their housing development was a series of streets with cul de sacs that were built up above the swamp, fairly new homes as well and a nice neighborhood.  I wondered about alligators and they said they'd never seen any but heard they were possible.

And good lord it was hot and muggy!  It was summer each visit, and I thought Calif got hot, but it was nothing like the heat of high 90's and a swamp nearby!

Really pretty countryside all down the Interstate 10, and so much water!

Went to New Orleans, and did the whole tourist thing.  With the possible exception of El Paso it was the poorest American city I'd ever seen.  Not like the places in Mexico and Haiti that I've lived, but for a US town it was surprisingly poor and run down.  Slidell and Metairie were not like that, and were pretty nice places.  Good food however in N.O.
Title: Re: What do you like about The Classic Rotary Phone Forum?
Post by: foots on October 13, 2009, 04:16:32 AM
Hey McHeath, my aunt used to live in Metarie. Have you ever eaten at the Come Back Inn there? They have the best muffulettas I've ever eaten.  I've been all over New Orleans too, I enjoy going to the Aquarium of the Americas, the Riverwalk and the Audubon Zoo as well as some other places but never in a million years would I ever want to live there.
Slidell is a nice place though. Alligators really aren't that bad as they usually don't bother people very much. It's the cotton mouths you need to worry about in the swampy areas. I'm glad you got to experience some of Louisiana's wonderful humidity, and if you think the high 90s were bad, this past summer we had several days of 103-104 degrees, not counting the heat index. By any chance did you have the opportunity to be attacked by any of our mosquitos? Multiple mosquito bites go very well with hot, muggy weather  ;D.

ok, now what are muffulettas? i have not ever been to louisiana, but i'm thinkin i'd like to check it out. would like to learn how to play "boo-ray". euchre can get a little tense between partners sometimes >:(

And here's me, thinking the English and the Americans spoke the same language.

I'm reading this thread in one window and wikipedia in another just to make sense of it all. This forum is better than Discovery and History rolled into one and it has the human touch.

You all make the US sound like a strange and wondrous place.
Title: Re: What do you like about The Classic Rotary Phone Forum?
Post by: McHeath on October 13, 2009, 10:31:11 PM
Yes we got to enjoy the mosquitos, and they got to enjoy us as dinner!  What made it even more phun was that the Slidell relatives did not turn on the AC as they were trying to save money, it was like sleeping in the oven.

QuoteYou all make the US sound like a strange and wondrous place.

It certainly is something.  I've been here and there around the globe and each land has it's interesting features of course.  What makes the US so interesting is the wide variety as it's just so huge, you can go from never see a drop of rain deserts with ancient American Indian peoples, to Cajun country of gators and the French Quarter in a couple of days drive.  (hard driving)

And as for speaking the same language, we don't even do that in America from one side to another.  We have a CD the kids at school listen to for English grammar work, and the woman on it has a thick Texas accent, which our hispanic California kids find almost impossible to understand.  It's pretty funny really, watching the puzzled looks on their faces when she says, "uh sin-tanse sin-tanse sin-tanse is kumpleet kumpleet kumpleet whan phive seempul ru-ules it meetz meetz meetz".

This forum is great for learning about other places.  I've learned a good deal about England and the Philippines as a result of spending time here and seeing where people are from.
Title: Re: What do you like about The Classic Rotary Phone Forum?
Post by: Dan/Panther on October 13, 2009, 11:25:00 PM
What I think makes the US so unique, is the fact, that you can travel short distances, and see so many different types of people, because we are basically a miniature world, whereas if you go to Mexico say for instance, you see the Mexican culture. Here in the US you can travel and see mini cultures from all over the world. What ever you can experince in the world, we will have a mini version of it here in the US.
The United States is perhaps the only country in the world where a majority of the people do not have a common background or ethnic origin.

Count me as one who has also experienced New Orleans humidity.  DC gets pretty muggy in the summer, but it's nothing compared to New Orleans.  It makes one wonder why a place so inhospitable was settled in the first place.  I went in January, so it probably was quite nice by Louisiana standards.  I had a stopover in Miami, and it was in the 90s there.  In JANUARY!  Ridiculousness.

I'm a northern guy and I needs mah snow!

Contraste, I was thinking the same thing about England. I've noticed from watching TV and from a few people I've met that the accent changes in different areas of the country. I once met 2 nice older fellows here that were on vacation or holiday as y'all folks call it. One guy was from Birmingham (England, not Alabama) and I could hardly understand him and his friend had more of an Irish sounding accent, though I'm not sure where in England he was from.
D/P is correct. I love to travel to other parts of the country when the opportunity presents itself. I enjoy meeting people. When I lived in Houston some time back,  I met people from Haiti, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Laos, Ecuador, Thailand, Vietnam, Nigeria, Michigan, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma ect... and made friends with most of them.
McHeath, I could be down to my last dime, but I'd cut back on eating before I'd even think of turning off my AC in the summer.

I can hardly understand people from Birmingham either and forget about the accents from further north. The further from London you get, the more pronounced the accents become and they are very different from one another. People living only relatively few miles from each other can have different accents. Cross the border into Wales and all the road signs are dual language and Welsh is fiendishly hard to pronounce.

I live right in the centre of London, near to Oxford Circus and Regent Street and just a short walk from the US embassy in Grosvenor Square and the cross-section of races and nationalities that congregate around here is amazing.

Of course there are lots of tourists but London is home to people from around the world and luckily they all can speak English to some degree, many of them to a better standard than native speakers.

When I was in the other clubs/forums there were a select few that were always looking to stir the pot, so I would end my posts with "It's a hobby, it's supposed to be fun."
The Forum is a very friendly place and the few disagreements are cordial, the way it's supposed to be. Everybody will not agree on everything, but respect is key.

Ken...you are correct, the is a wonderful place for collectors of telephones, from the novice to the more seasoned collector. Everyone is treated with the same courtesy. No one is talked down. Everyone tries to help the other guy/gal.

We all have one thing in common as we all started at the same place, a novice with an old telphone; trying to get it to work.

Again.....thanks to Dennis for keeping the Forum what it is, a Happy Place....Doug

From early on, I noticed the wonderful absence of cusswords.  Now I'm not above using them myself in the contentious political forums I spend too much time in, where those words are more common.  But it sure is nice to hang out somewhere that the language is wholly G-rated, and the most contention that goes around is over things like whether putting a 1950s dial in a 1920s phone is acceptable, forgivable, or unspeakable.

I may be off base, but I think it just makes sense that the same people who like old things (like antique phones) would have old values (like not cussing and treating others with respect).

You'd think so, but I also hang out on some old car fora, and in fact have left some because of all the political bickering and insulting. Respectful, they're not....

I'm happy to not see that here! :-)

Good thread to re-activate! I hadn't read this one before.

I guess THAT I missed the Summer 2009 BBQ at Dennis' place. I was hoping that "contraste" supplied the beer for that one. I may be in Canada but would take a good pint of English Bitter any day.

I missed the 2010 BBQ at Ramil's summer place too. Did everyone come to their senses and just charter a plane to the Philippines?

What happened to the 2011 summer BBQ? I must have been away on holidays myself and missed it where ever it was.

Anyway, I used to be on about four of the other club "lists" but slowly discontinued receiving them so this is my only telephone chat area now. Good Group.....

Terry, you need to drink your beer ice cold, a pint of McEwan's Export would do the trick, not like that lukewarm bitter the sassenachs seem to prefer... ;)

Contraste, I was thinking the same thing about England. I've noticed from watching TV and from a few people I've met that the accent changes in different areas of the country. I once met 2 nice older fellows here that were on vacation or holiday as y'all folks call it. One guy was from Birmingham (England, not Alabama) and I could hardly understand him and his friend had more of an Irish sounding accent, though I'm not sure where in England he was from. but I'd cut back on eating before I'd even think of turning off my AC in the summer.

If you go West North West from Birmingham you come to the Black Country, where the traditional industries were metalworking, foundries, chain shops, nail makers etc.  One of the main towns in the area is Dudley; I would guess that it's about ten miles or so from Birmingham, but the accent is distinctly different.

Yes I agree. North American's like their cold drinks COLD, including beer. I love the taste of English Bitter but prefer it colder than cellar temperature.

Speaking of cold drinks, I keep my glasses in the freezer.  And I even invented a new beverage, that I call a "phase change" for reasons that will become clear shortly:

Mix a bunch of fruit juices together in any combination you like.  Grape, apple, a bit of lemon juice, and some water, work well.  Probably orange and lemon, and lemon and lime, would work well, but add a little sugar.  (I don't know if this will work with alcohol beverages as a component, since alcohol freezes at a lower temperature.)

Put a glass in the freezer.

Put the bottle of mixed juices in the freezer as well.

When the bottle of juice is *almost* at the point where it starts to freeze, take it and the frozen glass out and pour yourself a glass full.

What happens is, the juice that is at freezing temperature but has not started to form ice crystals yet, hits the frozen glass, and some of it flash-freezes as it pours.   That is, it quickly undergoes the "phase change" between liquid and solid form.  The result of this in a moving liquid, is very much more like "snow" than like "ice."

So what you end up with is a glass of frosty fruit punch that contains a big chunk of the same liquid flashed into "snow" with a consistency very much like what you'd have if you used actual fluffy snow for that purpose.

This idea was picked up by a certain fairly well-known writer of science fiction, so if you see it in that context, you'll know where it came from.

And it goes superbly well with pizza.  So says this crazy American.

When I started here the first obvious things as compared to the ATCA and TCI Listserves was the ability to put pictures directly in with your posts. Most times on the other forums I couldn't be bothered adding picture links or even looking at other links that had been posted elsewhere.

Since then other things about this forum have become obvious. No one is better than anyone else here. No one makes fun of others questions or comments. We all are interested in the same thing and even though we all have different levels of knowledge and different areas of expertise, we all help each other out to te best of our ability.

We are always looking for phone parts. I am frequently pleasantly surprised to see the number of times I read "send me your address and I will put it in the mail for you".

People always think I am the AE expert. Not so much. I have my areas of AE expertise but it isn't wiring or differences between models that otherwise look the same. The guy that amazes me is Stub. Not only does he have the books handy to look up most AE questions he invests lots of his time in doing so and posts drawings and pictures from manuals, all with dial up Internet. Well done Ken! And Ken isn't alone in this area. Many of you amaze me. Phonesrfun and dsk always enjoy the challenge of something wrong electrically!

There are many phone experts from the Telco angle on here providing much useful information and always there to help out when someone can't figure out the best way to hook something up or to trouble shoot their phone lines or equipment.

Then there are the phone refinishers and refurbishes here on CRPF. There are many of you but seeing the work some of you do is inspirational.  Jorge Amely, Dennis Markham, Doug Rose, Finlover (remember him?) and many many more of you do incredible work.

For phone lovers, there is no better place than right here. Now everyone else can add all the groups of people that I have missed in my haste to get this posted.

Merry Christmas everybody!

Terry

Very well said Terry. This is my favorite forum.  Everyone here is so friendly and helpful.

I stop by here a few times every week to catch up on the messages, and like today,  spend several hours reading new topics or searching for info on my latest phone find.  But not all topics interest me,  so the format of this forum makes it real easy to pass some treads and read others in detail.

The find of the month is my favorite. Seeing what lucky finds other people get keep me going, and sometimes I do get lucky and find a special phone too.

My second is the auction predictions.  Guessing what a rare phone will bring in eBay. These little games make this a fun place.

But what makes the forum the best is what Terry said,  the people

So,  to all who read this,  a big thanks for being part of the forum, because it is your enthusiasm and willingness to share that makes this a great place.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all ! ! !

Yes, mostly the people.  That, and the fact that it is far easier to use than the listserves when it comes to pictures and diagrams.

I first joined when the forum was in its infancy.  One of the stodgy old gruffy guys (I am being kind) from one of the club list serves posted a thread there about what a bunch of klutzy people were on this forum trying to figure out how to make a phone ring.  A question that comes up a lot, both here and on the other forums.  I was appalled at his attitude towards the newbies.  That attitude is one that so many have complained about for a long time on the other forums.  I was also apalled at how he could take some cheap shots at fellow phone collectors.

I am not the most experienced phone collector there is.  In fact, I have never worked in telecommunications.  I do, however, know how to make phones ring, and can troubleshoot common phone issues, and I understand how phones are wired and how they work.  So, I decided that for no other reason than to help others out, I would join.

I have lots of other things to do with my time, but this forum is usually a several times a day stop for me.  I even check in during lunch at work.

I have developed some good online friendships here with people I have never met, such as Dennis Markham and Ken (Stub).  Some I have already met, like You, Terry, and I have met Greg (BrinyBay) several times, and he was a super help with last year's phone show in Seattle.

I have nothing but great things to say about this forum.  Thanks to Dennis, Terry, Dave and all the other admins that donate so much of their valuable time to keeping this a great place.  That takes a Hurculean amount of dedication and time.

Merry Christmas guys and gals! Good post Terry. This Forum makes it a whole lotta fun. I can't tell you how much I have learned being a member here. Everyone is nice, but then again, everyone should be nice. I am not trashing the Lists, but this is the place to be; treat people the way you want to be treated. No question is too stupid if you do not know the answer. Simple!

Big shout out to Dennis for keeping the ship on course and the new captains who help him out.

We do something here that is not done anywhere else....... we talk about out vintage phones. We post a picture to show ours off or ask a question about it. This is where other places have failed and we have prospered.

Merry Christmas....we done good!....Doug

I will chime in here too  :D

I don't think I even knew about this forum until Dennis came to my show on Mason, MI and mentioned something about it to me!  I think it's all in the format; I get SOOOOO tired of seeing 15 posts in-a-row on the "Correct way to change a NID". Or listening to some Geek-Elitist trying to make someone feel stupid for asking a particular question.

Just want to say that although I am (sometimes) bad as answering questions in a "timely" manner, I do have LOTS of parts that NEED to be distributed to telephone collectors that want to fix up their treasures. Just keep trying people; the "squeaky wheel" gets the grease (or parts).

Thanks guys for maintaining this forum, and Happy Holidays!

Very simple, I like the folks on here.

No matter how stupid one's queries are there's always positive feedback.

And where else could I have got a swap for a knackered RX for a 500 for a GPO RX from Larry - in Michigan.

Cheers to you all folks.

It is encouraging to see the younger members on here too. The 20 something's and 30 something's on here who are interested in phones is great but we even have teenagers here as well. Encouraging for the hobby for sure.

It is fun meeting other CRPF members at phone shows such as the one that Bill G hosts in Seattle. I haven't met many other phone collectors but those whom I have met were primarily at the Seattle phone show. I have met Gary G and Remco here in Vancouver and Jeremy W at San Francisco but that is pretty much it for me.

Another nice thing here is the off topic board that we don't have to worry about using whenever we want to. People here are all friends and sometimes it is nice to run things by friends first even if it isn't phone related.

I especially like seeing others phone collections so look forward to seeing additions to the topics in the Phone Show area of the forum.

Terry

Kind People!-very patient with uninformed people like myself.
Knowledgeable People!-just today I learned that an old telephone magneto phone does not mean it is a pretty shade of purple. (not kidding!)

I can spend hours browsing the forum just learning from everyone.

I also love that everyone here shares a common affinity for telephone collecting, something my Dad loved. :)

My opinions:
This is the best forum for amateurs regarding old telephones and related stuff.
Pros:
You may ask about everything, and get answers as facts or opinions, and nobody tells you that this is to simple, or stupid to ask about .
You may get several different answers, and disagreements. Sometimes this tells about different experiences, it may tell that it is not a one and only solution, and maybe that the solution you choose may be OK for you, but not for everybody else.
You are (relatively) free for politics, religious pressure, and negative feedback. When such things occur, the moderators removes it quickly.

Cons:
It may be difficult to see what is a fact, and what is an opinion. What is based on experience, and what is based on science.
You may not get the answers on really advanced level, but for that you may use other forums.

What about you, and the other members:
All of you are great, because you bear over with me and others having problems with expressing our needs and answers, you are always positive and, and if you are not, you do not writ it here.  You share your information, about how and what to do, or not to do. (Even when you have to refer to own bad experience)
No names, but I am impressed about how some of you may turn a wrack to a shining "new" telephone. How nicely you draw schematics.

And about me, the text over tells the most, but first of all I am proud and happy to be a member here, and to all new members, just follow  up in the same manner and you get help, and will be able to help others.

"Thank you for listening"

The folks here have been very helpful.  As far as divining a fact from an opinion, I do a little side research on a point I ask about to have a better idea where the facts lean.  For the most part there is a lot I have learned and been able to see here.  I doubt I could afford such a wealth of information.

Thank you, Dan (and Bill) for your comments.  I think Dan hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the members that make it a nice place.  It is thanks to each member that posts comments and questions, keeping things civil.  Of course there are times when people have a difference of opinion but it's usually done with respect and courtesy.  Also, as I've said before, without the work of the Moderators, who keep things in line, this all would not be possible.  The Auction Contest and  Finds of the Month require a lot of work and the efforts of TelePlay and AE_collector are greatly appreciated.  All of our Moderators deserve a big hand for their efforts in keeping this a fun place to spend time and talk about our hobby.

I couldn't agree more, one of the reasons may be like I and others e.g. looking at the Things around the election of president you have going on, and even how much we wonder about that process, we keep it elsewhere, because what ever you will answer on my questions, someone else will disagree more strongly, but if I ask about your opinion about a circuit, even with different ways to look at it we will not start a verbal fight. The different arguments comes up, and I have to choose e.g. if DC trough my receiver is tolerable or not, and you do your choice for your telephones. That is also why I posted my tribute to this forum some time ago, and we need to repeat it to know how good this actually is!

The educational aspect is tremendous. Not only have I acquired strippers and

learned how to take pictures, import them onto my hard drive, and post them
right side up, on CRP. All new skills for me. I can also now crimp spade lugs onto
26 ga wire neatly. (I used to do it with automotive crimpers with an assist from
needle nose pliers. Real neandertal style). So, thank you to everyone for all the
help and information. I'm sure it will continue. Go Forum.

Glad to hear that this forum is still has the culture that I felt so comfortable in and learned so much from, in spite of some of the animosity that arose a while back.  I'm not collecting phones anymore.  I sold, gifted, and donated most of my collection a while back.  I kept a few of the better ones I liked, but even most of those are boxed up, mostly due to lack of space.

I'm not collecting phones anymore.  I sold, gifted, and donated most of my collection a while back.  I kept a few of the better ones I liked, but even most of those are boxed up, mostly due to lack of space.
My guess is that you are just taking a break from phone collecting.
I have taken collecting breaks, sometimes for several years.

Eventually, I find a cool phone, it causes me to unbox some of my stash to compare and then (without warning) I start buying again.

I still attend at least 1 show a year, even when  I am not collecting. I sell off some phone stuff and buy at least 1 show find.
I have attended at least 1 show a year for the last 30 years.
I got lucky in 2020 by attending the January 2020 FL show. I was planning on a Fall show as well, but COVID happened.
I hope to hit a Fall show in 2021.

I ran across this post and read all the replies.
I joined the forum years ago when I was working on my collection, but work got so busy I had to back off for years until recently when I retired. I am now able to spend more time on a wonderful hobby, in both collecting and learning so much history about it.
I have to say, you cannot put a value on a forum such as this. It is tremendous. The resources, the great people, the extensive experience of so many of its members is just invaluable in my mind. They are so willing to help with any questions you might have. Plus, it's free!
My gosh, you can't ask for more. Especially if you are new at this.
I sometimes wish I lived in an area with more access to old phones, like back east. But only for that reason.
Out here in Northern Colorado they are a little harder to find, but luckily there are online opportunities.
I'm not sure if there are ever any shows out this way but I'll find out. I've been lucky to find a few phones at local flea markets and auctions.
But my point is, any new collector should not hesitate to join this forum. There is so much value to be had and I will certainly pass along the word.

I especially like the technical aspect when it comes to many telephone driven aspects.
Like ring extenders, how to trouble shoot so many different types of the old phones here.
And seeing collections and members collections and the vast differences in designs.
Like the red ITT trimline that's just beyond anything I've seen before. It's just great to see all these things I've never knew exited.
And the educational aspect is also great. Differant techinques to strip, chemically sand a shell to restore it. I just wish I knew about a lot of this stuff years ago.
I had a complete 1500 in pink but was so faded. I tried every thing I could think of to bring it back but gave up.

And the pictures of some of the collections here is so awesome.
So for me this was a great addition to my day to read about old phones issues and how some have overcome the problem and get a working phone from yesteryear is just invaluable.
Plus it's just fun to go through the older post's for the information. Some days for me is laborious and boring.
But I just come here and just look for interesting posts to entertain and educate myself.
