While perusing online auctions I ran across this otherwise plain ol' black 300 set. Why does the base plate have this small indention instead of the usual base plate with the wide "trough-shaped" indent that the capacitor sits in?

I'm pretty sure it an early 300 series base. I think they were experimenting with the caps to see which one would fit and work the best... and I think they discovered that without the regular indentation, the capacitor was getting crushed. as the set does have the bracket for the 195 series capacitor. don't be afraid to open up your phones and actually look.... thats the best way to find out....

An early 302. Most likely a small bump out to make room for the large end of the capacitor, the capacitor's cap, which was "thicker" than the can. When looking at the images below, the screw holding the capacitor bracket is on the opposite end of the small bump out.

This was a 302 made in 1938.

IIRC The 36 & 37 models had no "bump" at all. They were flat across that part of the bottom.

I thought this topic was posted to ask about the one small boss on the bottom of a 302 base spotted on some other site.

Since this topic has been expanded beyond the original question, then this topic by poplar1 is worth noting (he did spend years building his forum databases) in that it details all versions of 302 bases including the date ranges during which each was used and why. Even includes images of all base types which is really helpful but even if forgotten about by some can be easily found using the forum search function.
