Here are a couple of my favorites.

The first is Sorry, Wrong Number from 1943, starring Agnes Moorehead.

And then there's Meridian 7-1212 from the show, Columbia Workshop, broadcast in 1939. That's the number called to get the time of day, and back then it wasn't a recording but an actual operator who announced the time every fifteen seconds.

Another episode of Suspense with nice phone sound effects is The Hitchhiker, with Orson Welles. I had the privilege of doing the sound effects for that script in a summer class I took at Wake Forest, many years ago. At WFDD, they actually had 78s with payphone gong sounds for the different coin amounts and I dubbed them to 1/4" tape and edited them together to get the correct amount deposited in the payphone. Those quarter gongs were a great sound.

Sorry, Wrong Number is a great show too. I particularly like the 1945 version with the Roma Wine commercials. And to think they were all done live. Everything had to be done with great accuracy.
