This handset was discussed about in Phonium's post about his wooden intercom set.
Here are some pictures showing some details about the "barbell" style handset. Also a picture of the phone it sits on in my collection. Apparently the handset was redesigned when Kellogg made the 1000 series "Redbar" set. That version is more streamlined and less clunky looking.

Both the Masterphone 700 and Masterphone 900 had handsets that look like that. The Masterphone 1000 handset was redesigned and has "ears" on the handle a bit like the WE F handset.

I can't readily get a photo of the Masterphone 1000 handset.

Here is a catalogue image showing the pointy ends of the handle.

AE released the first US Bakelite handset in 1925 - it was not overly graceful.
WE released its Bakelite (E) handset in 1927 after spending about 5 years trying to get it right. They finally succeeded with the F handset.
I think Kellogg did a really good job with their handset and non-directional transmitter even though it was a bit later (1932?).

Volvo has it's diagonal stripe in the grill, BMW the split grill, Jag has that bad a@&'ed cat.

Kellogg will forever have the bar bell handset.

It did what it was designed to do.
