Candlestick stem repair?

For a standard 70s candlestick (heavy plastic?) phone does anybody have any idea of what might be a good way to reattach a stem that has broken clean off the base? I haven't had much luck with tape. Attaching posts to the base to surround the stem and then taping the stem to them works a little better but is still a little finicky.

what about JB Weld ?  I've used it to epoxy everything from plastic to Bakelite to cast iron.
