Odd handset combination

I ran across this auction and found the handset cord opening to be rather unique. I wonder how this particular handset ended up on this phone, or did they just replace the cord.
If it were any cheaper, and I was sure of the color, I'd buy it just for the pink handset cord.

I've had a couple of ITT 500s from the mid to late '80s that were hardwired but had a modular plug shaped hole in the handset.

Apparently, ITT still sold hardwired telephones, but tried to save money by keeping all of the handset tooling the same.

I can't buy this phone right now as my kilt is at the cleaners.

Those openings for the cords are kinda large.  What was up with that?

When I was a kid in about 1974 we had new phones put in the house, and I remember they had hard-wired cords shoved in a modular handset.  I think they were using up the old cords before the modular switch-over.
