Building Inspector insisted that they have an alternate escape route in case of fire.

The one on the left shows some good "outside the box" thinking. 

Turning it upside down makes the writing shelf a natural sun shade for the front porch.  Most phone collectors wouldn't have done it that way.

Plus the birds can ring the gongs when their food is gone.
