Hi Pholks:

As a person who is losing much of his close-up vision due to diabetes, I am always looking for ways to see better when working on projects.

I think I have found a great product, and will report back here when I have been able to test it out.

It is a LED USB 2.0 Digital Microscope 1.3 MP Magnification Ratio 5X to 500X

There are many on eBay, and reports I have seen have been very good.

I like it! As my vision gets poorer (just plain age!), I find more and more moments when this device would be handy, especially when a photo is needed and a hand-held magnifying glass won't cut it.

It looks like there are sevaral minor variants of this device on eBay, most selling for about $25. Amazing!

I'm with Bill, plain age often makes it difficult to see small details.  What I've been doing is taking macro pics with my digital camera then uploading them to my computer.  Also serves as a reference guide for which wires go where and a pictorial inventory.  Heck, on one or two occasions I even did that with a spray can with such tiny print I couldn't read it even with my glasses!
The idea that a four-year degree is the only path to worthwhile knowledge is insane.

I have done that in the past, too. For not only to make it larger, but for the same reasons to provide a record of where the connections are. Its just that that doesn't enlarge that enough for me now, so the microscope should make quite a difference. I can't wait till it comes!

I've worn glasses all of my life. I'm far sighted so they are basically magnifiers. An easy fix I've found works well for me is to simply put an older pair over the pair I am currently wearing and that does a nice job. Only problem is to make sure I close my eyes before putting the second pair on and again before taking them off. If I don't I get a real strange vision rush.

My Digital Microscope arrived...

It actually is a bit better than that - my focus slipped a bit when I snapped the photo.... It will take photos or video up to 2560x2048 pixels in size, and 400 x. For the low cost of it, it is amazing. It will be great for reading tiny print. While looking at the bill, I found a whole lot of places in it with little tiny numbers you can't see with the naked eye.

Interesting toy.

Another interesting shot - of a nice shiny 1971 quarter - not so shiny when you see all the imperfections in it! Once again, click on it to view larger.

Now, as far as less magnification and more distance to the area viewed, I find the maximum is about three inches to focus. However, this is more than enough to read tiny print on packaging, or to examine relays on my Strowger switch.

Certainly for close-up inspections, it will be great, and well worth the $50 price.

Of course if you buy one labelled as a magnifier for visually-impaired people the price goes up...
