Vintage Black Candlestick Phone

I have a  Vintage Black Classic Candlestick Phone American Classic Model made in Singapore..
This phone has three wires looking to be connected but try as I may I can not get a sign of life.
I am hoping to connect to a BT line in the UK,
Can any body help and advise please.
