I am wondering if anyone can help me out by telling me what gauge and thread pitch was used for the tiny bolts that hold the frame together on AE pay phone top flags. Ideally I would like to find 4 slotted chromed ones on line but they are smaller than the 32nd on an inch sizer on my gauge and at the hardware store so I don't know what to look for.. (I have Phillips head ones and the one has a mangled face.) thanks JC
There are other members who can say for certain. My guess is that they are slotless head 4-36 screws with hex nuts. A hardware store probably has only 4-40, slotted or Phillips head.
If you are referring to the four screws that hold the frame to the L portion of the top flag I always use 2:56X 1/8 Phillips head screws. They are available on ebay in both chrome and black oxide.
As David (poplar1) says, they are #2-56 and 3/16" in length. I don't like using ANY phillips head screws in my older phones just because they have a much too "modern" look to them. I have these in both stainless steel and brass. I chemically blacken the brass examples to give them a more authentic look. If you want to buy your own, they are offered on McMaster-Carr by the -100- pack. If you only want 4 or 8 or so, I can send you some. Photo attached. I got these from Otis LeVier many, many years ago.

thanks for the helpful info, all. I found several offering on ebay for this size including a packaging especially for collectors of hotwheels who use them to attach custom wheels to their cars apparently. Kleenex, The McCaster-Carr website is great. I will definitely be putting an order in there for all my current and future fastener needs. Do you get any other sizes from them you might recommend because they are especially good for phone restorations?

I use McMaster-Carr for just about all of my machine screw needs. The 1/4" - 28 slotted head screws are used in several places on Western Electric pay telephones, especially the vault door lock mounting. #6-40 screws are also another often used size, as are #8-32, etc
Kleenax--got some from your source and they worked great. thanks for the tip. JC

Excellent! But my name is Ray; "Kleenax" is just my super-hero disguise name ;-)
Really happy that I could help. I have searched this planet for a LOT of items (including people, but that is a different thread:), and am glad to lend a hand unless you ask me WHERE I find my Morel Mushrooms in Michigan.
