Dear CRPF:

Here is an idea for softening the high pitched tone of the 63A gongs used with early
P-Type ringers which are sometimes used as retrofit ringers in some antique phones...

While the 63A gong does give a more melodic sound, the high pitch can be irritating to some.

A way to partly solve this is to use the P-Type ringer with the nylon plastic clapper; the clapper arm will need minor adjustment done as follows:

1.Remove the aluminum 65A gong by loosening the screw, and removing the gong, dust guard and screw from the ringer.

2. Put the 63A gong in place and use the gong screw to mount it to the ringer.

3. Using a paper clip or similar tool to reach inside the gong, move the clapper arm back, and pull the paper clip out so that the clapper strikes the gong.

4. If you hear a "plink" instead of a "ding echoing sound", the clapper is touching the gong. The clapper arm needs slight adjustment done with needle nose pliers.

5. Temporarily block the pole piece and carefully bend the clapper arm; replace the 63A gong briefly, and repeat step 3.

If you hear a echoing ding sound, remount the 63A gong, dust guard, washer and screw on the ringer.

NOTE:Some P-type ringers have a stronger mechanism than others, usually the newer ones. So the overall ring sound might vary slightly.

This is also true of the P-type ringers with the brass clapper and 63A gong.

This was learned mainly through trial and error over time by me.

The attached pictures show a P-type ringer with a 63A gong fitted with a plastic clapper to soften the shrill ring.

It's a matter of clapper to gong clearance, that is why the clapper arm is adjusted to allow for a clear ring using the 63A gong, picture 1 shows the plastic clapper to 63A gong clearance

Pics of both types of clapper are shown to show the difference between them.

This procedure is a matter of choice for those using P-type ringers with brass gongs as retrofit ringers as a way to still get a desirable ring that's no so irritant.
