Identify possible lightning arrester?

this is marked on the brass cover "Patented Dec 19, 1905" and "49 M.T.G."

Perhaps the 49 mtg means something to some of you, or do you recognize the unit?

I can't help you on the manufacturer, but I can tell you it's definitely a telephone line lightning arrester.  The big square Western Electric arrester that was usually found mounted in the basement rafters near the line's entry point contained the same covered carbon contacts, although the cover was made of bakelite.

I think you've done it, Walt!  The second link looks nearly identical to the one Dave has.  It's got WE markings while the other one doesn't, but it looks the same otherwise (except for the missing bits).

The first link is the square one I was describing.  We had one in our house that was installed in 1936 when the house was built.  It was bypassed in the 1980s, and I still have it.
