Gray 23J Paystation on eBay

Came across this Gray Paystation. Looks pretty good and not a crazy price. I know less than nothing about these. Can one of our experts tell me if this is correct? I think the handset and cord are not original but I do not know about anything else.

You're right about the cord.  Most payphones I've seen have the straight armored handset cord.

Pay Stations from the '40s typically had straight vinyl cords; armored cords didn't come out until the '50s or '60s.

If it is from the '40s, then the F-1W handset could be correct.

I remember an old friend of mine telling me that they had a straight line handset cord payphone at MIT when he was there. He said they used to take a thumb tack and stick it in the cord, shorting the wires and allowing a free call to be placed!

I guess they should have known about those MIT boys!
