can some please tell me the years of production would have been for an automatic electric
ae 40, I recently purchased one of these and I am trying to figure out its age, thank you. Gregg

I don't know the exact dates but I can offer you my approximations. If someone has more accurate data I would love to hear it.

The AE 40 was first released in ~1940:
•   The code printed on the bottom and on the circuit started with 40
•   There was a metal bracket surrounding the inside of the dial cavity
•   The dial was a 24A36 with a pressed body
•   The ringer was physically large and low impedance

In ~1947 a second version was released (perhaps coinciding with the AE 47):
•   The code printed on the bottom and on the circuit started with 41
•   The metal bracket surrounding the inside of the dial cavity was gone
•   The dial was a 24A36 with a case alloy body
•   The ringer was physically smaller and high impedance

I don't know that all the changes happened at exactly the same time.

The AE 40 was replaced by the AE 80 in ~1954

I meant to post pictures of the different bases - here they are...
