Title: Doug Rose's Amazing Telephone Collection!
Post by: Doug Rose on February 07, 2010, 02:05:13 PM
Collectors....seeing Vern's place on the Forum gave me a bright idea! How about everyone take a few shots of their collection and post it for everyone to see. Very few of us can match Vern's, but let's give it a go. Since it was my idea, I'll go first. I spent all yesterday afternoon dusting and cleaning and took six pictures to give the best view of my phone room. Its quality, not quantity so let's see what you collect. I collect from the late 1880s to the color 302s of early 50's. I also collect Porcelain and glass Telco signs and assorted  telephone go withs. This should be fun, lets keep this thread going for awhile. Lets see what you like......Doug

darn,
I also  got motivated to rearrange the phone room. No photos yet(work in progress). Vern's photo's and my (new-in transit)soft KE500's convinced me to make some changes .

My phone room is 13 x 23.{ yes Vern, it is small by your standard. You saw it, Don't rub it in}

I have 25'-30' (linear) of library. Part of my  space is occupied by the "Glass Works", (fused dichroic glass jewelry, created by my wife and daughters).

I also store many "climate safe" items in my sheds.

Photo's will be posted after the transition.

Doug,  please send me photo's and stories on your clear 302. I am always chasing clear telephone info.

Every year in January, I take pictures of my Phone Room. New phones are added and old friends leave for other collections. In my 30+ years of collecting, I have never once regretted taking a phone from my room to send to another collector. This is my current Phone Room. I was fortunate, I did find some wonderful phones in 2010 ....Doug

Absolutely gobsmacking.

Kidphone obviously stays in an ex-nuclear bunker, otherwise how does he get all that lovely stuff hanging off the walls and sitting on the floor!

Doug as I've said before, that is one beautiful collection of telephones and related items.  Every time I look at those photos---after some time has passed "I spy" something different that I'd love to have in my collection.  This time I Spy those nice colored Stromberg Carlson 1212 Fatboys.  Fantastic!

Are there TWO 334A subsets on that shelf?

Excellent collection Doug.   Looks like you cannot get a bigger TV because it may fight with the phones.     Your telephone room looks a lot like my wife's basset hound room.  She has over 2000 items in her collection. Your collection makes my 125+ phone room look puny.

Northernman - they are Tibbles.  Interesting article on Wikipedia.

That is a very nice collection Doug. I spottede more than 1 HTF item.

Since you occasionally sell an item, I really don't think you have a telephone problem (yet).

Thank you all for you kind words on my phone room. No problems can find me in here. It is my escape from real world. You will usually find me in here a few hours before I call it a day with a good book and some good music on the stereo. Tom Petty's Live Box set is whats been playing the past few weeks in here, after bumping the Beatles Box set off. The view is pretty special as well.....Doug

Kenny...the Manual Blue 302 is a Painted Metal set and the color is a dead ringer for a blue thermoplastic set. This was done by Mark Scola as was the Old Brass 302 metal set next to it. These are just amazing phones. Mark does such a great job painting. They came out so nice, you rub your fingers over the paint, you cannot tell if its plastic or paint. I always told Mark he should go into business refurbing phones...Doug

Wow, Doug!  So many HTF and awesome phones in your collection!  I love the SC 1212 phones in COLOR as well!  Awesome Kellogg phones too--I recently obtained a Kellogg 900 VERY reasonably on eBay.  I still need to fine an ivory Kellogg phone for the random, white Kellogg dial blank I bought years ago.  Haha.  It was...wishful thinking, I guess?  Ah, the Pearch Telephone Company...come back...

Yow!, Doug, you've got a seriously impressive collection there, and some of those are seriously rare.

So I have a pesky question. That yellow and orange Kellogg 1000, what's the history of that one?

I notice that your collection is looking a bit cramped and probably takes a lot of effort with dustin' and polishin'. I'll do you a favour and save you some work by taking the aqua 302 off your hands - won't even charge you ;)

Doug, those pictures would make a great jigsaw puzzle.  I think there are places that you can send in your own photo to have a puzzle manufactured.  Phone collectors may like something like that.  You'll be rich!  (I get 10% for the idea). :)

What an outstanding collection.  Wow, I had thought back in the late 80s I was the only phone collector. This website is truly awesome.  Oh, cool Abbey Road pic.   I have a poster of John Lennon walking down stairs into his head (very interesting drawing) signed by Billy Preston back in 1982.  Anyway...Your phone collection is amazing!

It has finally happened! I bought a few nice phones at Brimfield for my personal collection, but I no longer have a phone to easily remove. In the past, I would buy one and then send one to another deserving home. I am now having trouble finding one to go to a deserving home.

I think my collection might finally be closed. Might!.....Doug

Doug,
What an absolutely wonderful collection. I always felt a collection on display should be well organized, but Now I realize that is NOT the best way to display a collection. My collection, you can look at it, and the next time pretty much know what to expect. Your display, Like Dennis mentioned, you find new things every time you look. Never gets boring. I did notice that you have a couple Lanterns hanging over the window, I have those exact same two Lanterns The blue Dietz with Red Glass, and The Red with Red Glass.

Hey Scot....the dusting is me. Janet vacuums one a week. I dust it in shits. I use a big feather with a little pledge on it. It works well, but is just a surface clean. I do a section every few months where I take every phone and wipe it with a clean cloth. It is labor intensive and takes a lot of time, but well worth it to me.....Doug

Amazing as always Doug! I totally understand why your carpet layer quit and now works free of charge for the "Rid the World of Old Telephones" Scrap Metal Association.

Doug - Always appreciate seeing the updates!  Nice variety, arrangement, and cleanliness!!  Two items:

1) I see your new rose manual 302, taking the place of a red manual 302, leading me to guess the red one was painted.  True?

2) I can't find your stock exchange turret phone....  Is it there somewhere?

I just had a thought...

How much do you think those walls weigh right now? :o

Fantastic collection, Doug! I wish we had a 360° view of the room. I still get confused about what part of the room is what.

Love the pictures - it's giving me some ideas for how to display my phone "subcollections": Princesses in Color, Trimlines in Color, 564/565s in Color, and the "White Collection" - about 50 different models, all in white (or a could of cases antique white).  I'm also working on a wall display for 554/1554/2554s in color to hang on a wall

Ideally, I'd like to hook up some of the subcollections with a Panasonic 624 or two...

Christian.....when we redid the house in 2001 this room was constructed to display telephones.  The original shelves were built by a carpenter. Extra beams in the wall to distribute the weight.  I don't think anyone in 2001 thought it would look like it does now....including me!  8)

Yaoza, that's a lot of communication in there.
Very impressive collection, and a recliner right in there so you can sit and bask in the glory of all those phone's!
That's a LOT of dusting, that must be a full time job all in its self.

Doug, I don't know if you have ever addressed the possible issue of the weight of all those heavy phones. Have you had to make any reinforcement in the infrastructural at all? Most walls aren't called on to support that kind of weight.

I'm always amazed and mostly jealous when I see these annual updates!

Hard to believe that the "new carpet" was installed 8 years ago! Every time the the carpet was to be cleaned somehow the door was locked and I was at work with the key  8) I was the only one who went in there! It was fine.

Well my son give me a combo lock for the Phone Room. I love the convenience as there are EIGHT grandchildren roaming the halls.

Janet cleaned the carpets yesterday and they came out fantastic. I was working from home and was pleasantly surprised. Carpet still look new....Doug

You'd better be careful, Doug. This could become an obsession.

Nice collection. Now, how many of them are hooled up and working? Or do you have a bench where selected phones can be hooked up?

I enjoy your postings. I'm surprised we haven't run into each other...I'm right down the road in Holliston.

From what we see of member activity, Doug logs into the forum several times a day.

He uses this thread to show off his room of phones to everyone, usually with yearly photos. I guess now the room is closed to new additions as per his post above, there is nothing to show other than a bit of rearranging, dust removal or cleaning the carpet again.
