The early 302s used during trials also differed by the details of the ringers.  There were at least two types.  The early one mounted the clapper armature on a flexible metal blade, while the second one, the one that succeeded for production, used as a pivot an axle having its bearings on the top and underneath in the frame.

The flexible metal blade would have the advantage of being frictionless, a feature finally fulfilled in the C-type ringer for the 500-set, a little over a decade later.
