NOS TRENDLINE handset cord feels 'oily'

Greetings,

  Just received a NOS sealed in plastic handset cord to replace the hopelessly faded one that came w/ an ITT TRENDLINE phone. The 'new' matches perfectly for color but feels a little greasy-sticky. Does this mean the plastic is turning back into oil? There is no odor & it is is still supple & springy.   It also has a plastic nubbin so I am reluctant to try it in the phone until I know whether or not it is salvageable - the fewer times I need to remove the cord the better as I don't want to break the plastic thingy.
