Title: North Electric Galion wiring problems
Post by: wds on January 07, 2017, 10:24:39 PM
I'm having a little trouble getting my North wall phone to work.  This seems to be an older version, with an odd transformer.  The phone has the standard wiring diagram, but the coil terminals don't match the wiring diagram.  The coil has terminals for L1, L2, Y, GN, and C.  The wiring diagram uses the R terminal for the handset red wire, but this coil doesn't have a R terminal.  Any suggestions?  I've tried all the variations and the phone doesn't want to work - it shorts out and I get the operator message to hang up and try again.

Also, the wire colors on the condenser doesn't match the wiring diagram.  Are the wires on the condenser paired at the ends, or is it one wire on each end that makes up the pair?

You might look  closer but the 2 terminals should be the L2Y.these do not connect to  the ind coil. nothing is their now.North made some of their own ind coils.

The terminal that I thought was marked L2, must be the R terminal.  So if I treat the Y-L2 terminal as one, and the other as R, the phone works.  I don't see any R marking around that terminal, but that must be it.  Thanks!

Any thoughts on how the wires on the condenser are paired?  Nice phone with the original North components and a North dial.

Dave    ....   The attached photo of a set I sold a couple of years ago may help identify the condenser pairs, as the schematic on this one is in fairly good shape.    The color legend is on the right hand side of the schematic label.   Orange & red appear to be the 0.5 mfd side for the ringer, and the blue & black would appear to be the 2 mfd side for the talk circuit.      I remember the colors on mine were a little hard to identify, but as I remember I confirmed the correct wires by their physical connection point at each end of the condenser can.     If you have a meter that reads capacitor values, you can confirm which pair are 0.5 mfd, and which are 2.0 mfd.    Click the image and it'll enlarge.

Jeff,

Is that the original wiring cleaned up or did you make new leads? And if new, what did you use for the wire. Looks like two different types, neither of which are cloth.

And, an interesting trick bending the spade lug down to hold passing wires in place.

I do that sometimes when I want to keep wires in a fairly neat semblance of order, but to honest John, I didn't touch the wires on this set.    To the best of my knowledge everything you see is factory or telco installed.       The set was a very nice North 7H set in mahogany Bakelite, with a North dial and a matching mahogany Bakelite finger wheel which was in perfect condition.      The Bakelite finger wheels on North sets are quite often broken.
I resisted the urge to "play" with anything on or in the set.     It was obviously a telephone for a North collector to own, and I didn't want to create any issues with a buyer.
I cleaned it as best I could without removing or disconnecting anything, and that's about it.   The set was in excellent condition.
