Title: Compubit / Jim's (Growing) Phone Collection
Post by: compubit on March 18, 2015, 12:20:12 AM
I'm still trying to decide how to "specialize" - if that's possible...  Right now, it's a mish-mash focused mostly on the Western Electric family...

First off is "Phone 0". Unfortunately, I no longer have "Phone 0". I was a black Stromberg Carlson 1543 "Cut Corner" desk set from my dad's parents after they downsized houses in the late 70s. That phone was taken apart and rebuilt so many times (and "redesigned" with new wooden cases). It was also the first phone where I learned that a ringing phone can give you a shock.

My oldest phone I still have is next. It's a Western Electric 2702BM Red Process model, bought back in 86/87 as AT&T was getting out of the phone business.

Next up is a yellow 2554 from a Mom's mom, when she moved from Suffern, NY (New York Telephone) to Johnstown, NY (GTE) in the mid 90s.  GTE had different jacks (the modular plug stuck out of the back about 3/4" and the mounting holes were slightly different and it wouldn't fit, so we bought her a new phone.  It now needs a good cleaning/polishing.

Next up is the 1500 I just cleaned up (much more recent purchase) - and what got me started posting this topic. Basic old white 1500.  Currently has a NOS coiled cord - and I'm looking for a white wall cord to connect to a matching round 4-prong plug I have. I'm still working on the original white cord, and once it's white, I'll swap it out. (eBay purchase)

Finishing up the first made me want to get the other 1500s together...

All (except the white) have matching colored line cables and color-matched 4-prong jacks.

The green has yellowed into an Olive color and the pink has some yellowing toward Salmon.

Next up is my first soft plastic colored phone (I have a black, but it's in the queue to be cleaned up).

Red 500, mostly matching dates 2/57 base and handset elements. Beautifully restored with a matching line cord. Currently sits in the living room next to the couch on an antique table. (eBay purchase)

On to my "354 on the wall".  This was the phone I saw that got me back active into the collecting community (and finding the forums).  Something about this classic says "I deserve to be used!" My spiral into collecting has been downhill from here...

This unit was delivered restored and polished (could use a little more), and looks amazing.  I added a 554 "add-on" modular back-plate (easily removable), use this phone nearly every day to make sure my Panasonic switch is working. The coiled cable is cloth covered, and not original, but still looks sharp.  Inside dates are all over the place; dial is a type 6.

My plan is to take one of the other 354s I have that's not in such good shape, clean it up and repaint it an alternate color (looking at Medium/Mediterranean Blue). (purchased from Goodwill)

Great collection, Jim! I love the 1500 collection!

I think that red 500 was from member "Harry Smith". He had it in the Classifieds section until he finally decided to sell it on ebay.

Nice 1500 collection! Keep going for the rest of the colors.

Yes that was my Red 500.

It was from Harry.  Thanks, again!

Now further on into the collection...

Next up is another member purchase: Kenton's Ivory Soft Plastic 500 set. Beautiful shape and yet another soft 500 color. (Catching a pattern?)

And further down the Soft Plastic 500 - Pink! This one needs some cleaning and polishing, but fills that pink hole in the 500s.  Before I discovered this site, I wasn't aware of a WE 500 in pink - as far as I knew, sets came in the basic 8 colors, plus pink for the Princess and brown & rust for the Trimlines... (I was aware of gray, due to my internship in college with the Dept. of Defense - gray phones were secure; black were not secure - but not "out in the wild"). (eBay purchase)

I sent a PM to Ken the second I saw that ivory 500 for sale, but you got it before me! Very, very envious of that one!

Light gray 2503 data set.  I actually have 2 of these: one is configured for normal phone operations (and data when the plunger is lifted), and the other the exact opposite (data on/off hook-lift plunger for voice). These have an RJ-45 plug in the back (mounted within the unit - not on like the RJ-11 of a normal 2500 set). (eBay purchases)

Two more recent additions. GTE/Automatic Electric Styleline desk phones: rotary in Sunny Yellow and touch calling in Tropic Green. The dial is very, very sluggish on the yellow phone - will have to figure out why, or worst case, find a donor phone...

(And yes, the colors are bright as the pictures indicate!)

Now for the white 2500 I use as a reference when chemically fixing faded phones. Refurbed in the early 90s with new AT&T plastics (no metal screw anchors in the cover). Had a bad Touch Tone dial when I received, so replaced it with a #72 NOS dial I had picked up. The short throw pad seems appropriate for the newer plastics. (eBay purchase)

Great collection! I love the red 500. They seem to have a high valuation. My next purchases will be the 554 and a 1500/2500. The 554's can be found in Ireland but are quite rare. I will have to try source a 1500/2500 from the USA. The carriage will be a crippler though.

Thanks!  There's more to come... (I'm working on the rainbow of Trimline wall phones...).  I have a second red that I picked up at a flea market for $20 that just needs a quick buffing and it looks as good as the day it was made (I'd swear it's been stored in a low-humidity box in a dark closet since the 50s...)

Maybe a trade could be worked out for something available in Europe not readily available here...  Interestingly enough, with the variety of phones I have, I don't have a 554 in my collection - several 354s, but no 554s... (Focusing on the Trimlines for now...)

Jim
The soft 554s can be a good gap-filler for a color 500 that you haven't found yet. For example, I have four color 554s; three of them are soft plastic. Two of those are Gray and White, which are two colors I don't have in SP for 500s.

I have a 554 lined up for the equivalent of $16. Going to pay a visit to my local car boot sale this sunday.  What do you use to buff up yours?

I haven't polished too much.  Where I have, I started with wet sanding: 800 then 1000 then 1500 then 2000, followed by Novus #2 Polish.  Not sure if Novus is available on the other side of the Atlantic, but if not, I'm sure there's some equivalent available.

For my white and ivory phones, I'm using the Hydrogen Peroxide hair treatment "Salon Care 40" from a US chain called "Sally Beauty Supply".  If you go to the restoration techniques and the sub forum for "Discolored Plastics - Improving it Chemically"  I have a topic in there on the white phones I've been working on of late...

I have the pink 500 which is more of a salmon in real life - debating whether to go the chemical route or just sand...  (Also have a "new" Medium Blue trimline with some yellowing, so it appears greenish, to work on also...).

Between all of my phones, I have all of the basic colors, plus a couple of the early 90s "new" colors (Mocha Brown 2554 Base - no handset, Medium Blue Trimline & Princess, a Slate Blue Princess on the way).  The gaping "holes" are the 4 early retired colors:  Mediterranean Blue, Oxford Gray, Mahogany, and (Dark) Rose Beige.  The other "toughie" will be Turquoise - too many faded Aqua Blues out there that you can't tell by the picture.  Heck, the pictures I have of my Turquoise look more Aqua Blue than Turquoise...

I put together a matrix in Excel of the colors known to me (not including any custom colors) - I guess I'll post it to get some feedback from everyone...

A similar method to cleaning "yellowed" headlight lenses then, fine sanding paper and some cutting compound. 3M do the best compound there is, or I have used G3 compound paste made by Farecla.
I must check my local salon supplies wholesaler the next time I am there, (I'm a Sports Massage/Physical Therapist in my civvie life!). Thanks for the tips.
I generally build up my collection then purge it with a sell off and start again, trying to find the more unusual models.

Let's add to our Princesses with a new "old" color - teal blue (similar to the Mediterranean Blue, but for modern equipment).  It has the "new" Princess innards (no light, opaque dialing buttons). (eBay purchase)

I remember seeing the "new" Princesses in the 86-87 time frame, and that's when I decided to get the Red phone (Phone 1) - I leased it for 2 months then purchased it, since at the time, you couldn't purchase them anymore, but could lease, then buy.  In my mind, the opaque buttons are just wrong - It's lovely, It's little AND IT LIGHTS!!!!!!

Here we have a older AE 80 in red.  The is a manual compensating phone with the metal plungers.  Made by Automatic Electric (not Leitch). Nice and clean. (eBay purchase)

The classic AE 80s (definitely not the AE 80E plastic phones) had a place in my heart - my grandparents in Michigan had 2 - one beige (similar to WE rose beige) with white numbers on the dial bezel, and 1 ivory - when they moved houses in 79, they were able to keep their phones - by that time GTE was issuing the AE 80e phones (I know because we had them near Dallas - and we were both in GTE territory at the time). They also had a touch calling beige Styleline wall in the kitchen - when you dialed that phone (DTMF), you could hear the central switch converting to pulse while waiting for the call to complete.

Turquoise Princess. (eBay purchase)

This is the phone where I discovered the true difference between Turquoise and Aqua Blue. Though the picture isn't a good representation of it's true color, next to an Aqua Blue, it looks even more Turquoise and it's obvious.  (I'm including a reference picture with the 1500.

Here's a picture of my Yellow Accent display/demonstrator model phone. It includes the (311) 555-2368 phone number on it, and has no innards (except for those needed to display the phone - Touch Tone pad, modular jacks, plunger mechanism). (eBay acquisition-sold as a working phone, but wasn't)

Back to a rotary phone: 5302 Phone refurbished by "Fold-a-Phone, New York, 1972". (Antique Mall find).

Ringer gongs replaces with a metal button that made a "rat-a-tat-tat" sound.  The button has been removed and is on its way (one of these days, I promise) to a Kellogg's employee. Base plastic says "Western Electric", but handset says "Northern Electric" (and the ringer had a "Kellogg" part).

It's time for a weekend update...

I've been working on my white phones (that aren't currently white) using the hair care peroxide treatment with our beautiful (if chilly) sunny weekend. (TTrimline, 500 and 1554 to go with my 2702, 1500, 2500 and Sculptura) More to come on this as work progresses.

Now for some Blue Princesses: (counter-clockwise from top left)
702 Turquoise
2702 Aqua Blue
2702 Teal Blue
2702 Slate Blue

I'm liking the Slate Blue - but I'd call it more of an Indigo rather than Slate...

I like the slate too... ;)

Even though it's not considered collectible now, rarer early-'80s to mid-'90s AT&T and late Bell System sets like that will become more desired as time moves on, kind of like the WE500 market right now as opposed to ten or so years ago.

Well, I think I have enough color variety to post this picture. Just added 2 new colors to the Trimline/et al collection.  From top to bottom, left to right (WE unless noted):
Cherry Swirl (SC)
Butterscotch Swirl (SC)
Mint Swirl (SC)

Burgundy (PacTel with WE 2220C insides)
Cherry Red
Rose Pink
(Dark?) Teaberry Pink (Painted - I have 2 of these) - I thought Teaberry was a darker shade...
Orange (ITT)
Rust
Harvest Gold (SC)

Teal Blue
Aqua Blue
Turquoise
Lime Green (SC)
Forest Green
Moss Green
Pastel Yellow

Black
Light Gray
White
Chocolate Brown
Light Beige
Light Ash (ITT)
Ivory

I know ther are other colors out there (e.g., bright red (ITT/SC), Sunny Yellow (WE), Butter Yellow (Noteworthy), and of course clear), so I have to keep looking... (But it's a decent start...)

Very, very nice collection. I am envious of your light blue multiline set, and the fact that you have most every color offered.

The bookcases hold the phone nicely; however, did you consider a lighter colored bookcase stain? I would be interested to see if you like the phone more with a darker background.

Yup, that is a turquoise 565 - bought it on eBay as "Aqua Blue" - when it arrived I was shocked to see it was turquoise. It needs a new handset cord (has black now) - I picked up one in Lancaster. The red 565 needs some significant cleaning. Gotta keep my eyes and open for the missing colors.

I though about a lighter cabinet, but all of the other cabinets in the basement are the same color.

On the other hand, the dark bookcase will make my next collection pop: white phones. So far I have most of the standard phones:
Desk: 500, 510,1500,2500, SC1543, AE80
Wall: 554,1554,2554,SC1654,ITT3554,2555, SC1553, AE90
Princess: 701, 702,1701,2702,2702CS
Trimline: 220, 1220, 2220 & AC/AD bases (various models)
Office/Multiline: 565, 1565, 2565, AE881

A couple of known holes: AE80e (both rotary and push button), AE Styleline models, AE Starlite, Call Director, u.a.

I did decide to stay away from the design line phones, though I do have a white Sculptura I really like (and may sneak into the final display...)

Working in the PBX department I always had access to the normal office coloured phones...Black, Beige, Ivory and White. So, It was only when I stumbled upon a coloured phone (bright colours) that I bothered to grab it. I stored things for years and it was only once I started to sort out what I had and get one of each out on display that I realized that I had virtually no usable white phones. I had lots of Ivory, many of which turned out to actually be discoloured White phones. I then realized how hard it is to find white phones in good condition.

You have one heck of a start on white phones there Jim!

Here's a photo update from the 1500s. All that's left is grey - debating on putting a late 60s 2500 cover on one of the chassis. Ideally, I'd like to have a set with dark faceplates and one with color matching faceplates. I know - give it Time!

As I have as updating the pictures, I realized I had already posted the others - this was the only update.

For th white collection, I've picked up a white WE660 rotary card dialer, a white WE2870 Touch-a-Matic 32, a white WE 107B speaker, a white Automatic Electric 83 Space Saver, both Rotary and touch call desktop Starlites and a Misty Cream (almost white) AT&T 2500Y, along with a few miscellaneous white buttons and switches.

A few new additions to my collection:

- WE Big Button (Orange/Yellow buttons)
- AT&T Signature (2554CMPG - assume this is the model number as this one doesn't have model number sticker on it, but a yellow one I have does).

Picked up 2 more phones today:

- A  Sunny Yellow (Color Code -303) Touch Tone Trimline. When I took it out of the box, I was doubtful of the color, but side-by-side it's obvious. (Picture 1: Sunny Yellow -303 on the left, (Pastel) Yellow -56 on the right). Also the Touch Tone pad feels different and pressing 2 buttons simultaneously results in a characteristic similar to a 35 Tone pad (2 buttons in one row or column generate a single tone; 2 offset buttons [e.g., 1 & 5 together] generate nothing), plus the handset feels a little lighter.  Another color for the Trimline collection! (24, I believe)
- A white AT&T CS2500DMGF (made in Taiwan) - for the white collection.

Nice finds and nice collection! Those design line and signature phones seem to be something people love or hate. Personally I like them, for the funky styles of the design lines, to the last stab at classic designs with bell ringers with the signature series.  That sunny yellow trimline looks beautiful. When talking about the keypad are you comparing it to a round button or later one? I've only experienced the square button model but they've all done the two button single tone behavior like the 2500 style keypads of the era.

It has the square buttons, but the buttons have a different feel - it feels like a rubber membrane button, vs. a spring loaded in earlier models.

Also, the font on the Button face is a Helvetica-style font vs. the original square button phones used a Univers-style font. (The number 1 is the definite giveaway)

This last generation of rotary Princess phones use Helvetica-style numbers on the number ring, as do the rotary Trimlines.

The screw covers on this series also say AT&T in matching colored plastic on the handset, vs. the base seen on earlier models, but the bases seem to be refurbished original bases (with an RF sticker on the bottom).

Well, I can add Country Blue (-305) to the Trimline Color Collection.

[Pictures for comparison vs. Teal Blue (-145) ]

Nice! Seems the Teal one has yellowed a bit, as they are very prone to do. My mom has a Teal CS Trimline from 83 so I like both it and the Country Blue. I believe Country Blue was only available on lease models. I wonder if that handset was remanufactured like the base and got an updated AT&T screw cover as part of it.  The CS trimlines sold after breakup had the Bell Trimline screw cover replaced with a plastic number card cover and a paper strip with the AT&T globe logo on it, so I think the molded plastic AT&T covers were only used on lease phones.

Interesting about the short travel keypads too. Does the Country Blue one have it like your sunny yellow one? I wonder if it was a cost reduction for keypad replacement during refurbishment post breakup, as I think all the pre breakup Trimlines I've come across have the normal long travel linear keypads.

This one has the old keypad in the handset - the box that came with it is marked "Refurbished" (vs. "Reconditioned" on the Sunny Yellow Trimline).  The Sunny Yellow keypad has nearly the full throw as the classic square-button handsets, but it has a different feel (membrane-based switch, vs. spring-loaded mechanical)

I do recall the paper/clear plastic screw cover on the CS models.

The teal has slightly yellowed, but the picture amplifies the yellowing...

Finally have a pair!

The blue/green one needs a retr0brite (or equivalent) processing to get the base to the original white. The good news is that the buttons don't yellow!

The blue /green is very hard to find. It makes a pair. Submit it to find of the month.

You could swap the buttons to an un faded set.
A buddy of mine had the orange set . He dialed by pattern, so he swapped around the buttons for fun.

I've been lucky. Both sets of button look mint. Many have scratches and fading (yes,I've seen some fading of the orange buttons to almost yellow...)

How I spent my holiday weekend:

While not on the scale of FABphone's new phone room, I did put up shelves for displaying a couple of my subcollections:

- Desk Trimlines (25 different colors + white)
- 1500s in color (10 colors plus an early 2500 light gray which will change to a 1500...)
- Princess phones (18 + Imperial + White)
- Many of the various white phones in my collection (but not all)

I still need to organize the white phone (and remove duplicates from the display)and to build out the panel for wall-mounted phones (it'll go to the right of the shelves).  I can also see how faded some of them are...

Nice collection, you get any more and will have to reinforce that wall. :)

Wow. Lots of phones, and a nice collection of Trimlines. I have only a couple of Trimlines but if I had to choose just one everyday phone that would be it. Nice to hold, a good weight, and great to have the dial in the hand.

Thanks!

Now I have to start "unfading" a number of the phones...

Actually, the shelves are bolted to studs in 35 places (5 Vertical supports with 7 screws...). They're not going anywhere! ;D

Wow, I should say not. Those are there to stay!
Good luck on faded sets, I never had much luck with those in the past, so I avoid those sets were possible.

Lots of information on the process of restoring the colour of the bodies and handsets out there. "unfading"

Sounds good on the wall, I use 2" lag screws to mount my payphones to the studs and they're not going anywhere either! :)

Great collection. I see a lot of yellowed white phones. There are a few different methods on here about restoring plastic. Teleplay (John) has posted some very good, very detailed processes. Also I have used Salon Care peroxide hair cream with great results on white phones.

- Princess phones (18 + Imperial + White)

Is that an orange Princess phone?   Is that painted or was that made by someone other than WE?

I thought I was only missing grey and transparent from my collection...

It was painted - I purchased it off of eBay, and I believe was done by Richard Rose.  Still looking for a Teaberry Pink (would also be painted), as well as a purple and a lavender...
