Thank you guys for explaining this.....I always thought it was to call a switchboard or operator or something...turns out I was right.  Thanks for explaining the mechanics of it!

My manual GPO 706 has an earth-loop Recall button, not really of much use these days as they don't really do much, though I think I reconfigured it to act as a Timed-break Recall (useful feature on the Panasonic 616, even though I could just dial a 1 or tap the hookswitch!!), either that or just disconnected it... :)
