Just for the fun of it, how many can we find? I came across this odd-ball one at a thrift store.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il3w4V0WX0A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il3w4V0WX0A)
Holy cow, I have that record, too. :o
We're gonna have to find you a record player from the '40s or '50s, to save your records from the steel needles, though. Yikes.
The needles are designed to wear out after one play. I'm not a vintage record collector, all of them I've acquired at thrift stores. But yes, I'd like to get a half-way decent phonograph to play some of the better ones on. The Victrola I got is for the 10s-30s sounds.
I have seen some modern phonographs that use a hi-tech "needle. The sell for around $80. For about 300 you can get one that plays the record and burns it to CD.
These were at Target around Christmas.
Jim
The $80 one would be my choice. $300 would get me a nice phone. I've never owned an audio system because I don't listen to music that much at home, but always wanted an old working Victrola. My first choice was one of those table-top models with the big horns, but found out they're are prohibitively expensive.
But, my intent with this thread was recordings/songs that refer to a phone, so I renamed it so as not to get off-topic.
You can also find sapphire-tipped, straight-shank needles that will add a measure of safety to playing records on an acoustic machine. The main problem is the extreme weight of the tonearm and soundbox.
Back to phone songs, how could we forget the most famous performance of this particular number?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HAjhtPZGDY
I have that record. Great song!
How about "My lady of the telephone" on Edison BA cylinder record?
"On the telephone, I can hear you.. And, it seems my own, that I'm near you...
You're as haunting as can be..
You are ever haunting me....
Even in my dreams you are calling,
with a voice that seems so enthralling..
And, I love but, you alone, my lady on the telephone!"
Bill Cahill ;D
Here's the "phone related" song I know... That must be a 302 bell sound in there even though my 302 doesn't ring that pitch.

That's the one I was trying to remember! I knew one of those big-band guys did a song with a phone number in it, but couldn't remember who. I thought it was Benny Goodman.
I think of three, but they're more recent.
Beechwood 4-5789 - The Marvelettes
Lonesome 7-7203 - Hackshaw Hawkins
As Soon as I hang up the phone - Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty
Has anyone mentioned a big band favorite titled "Pennsylvania six-Three-Five Hundred"?

I don't get what the connection to telephones is on this song. ???
Up here in the high desert we have a cactus that has a very hard stiff thorn, that I've read they used at one time for record player needles. I've picked them and they do work for about 2 songs, no record damage.
Next time I'm out with my camera I take a photo of one of the cacti to show you the thorns.

That's not hard to believe, since there are wooden needles you can use on Victrolas.

Operator by The Grateful Dead.
Operator, can you help me, help me if you please.
Give me the right area code and the number that I need.
My rider left upon the Midnight Flyer,
Singin' like a summer breeze.
I think she's somewhere down South, down about Baton Rouge,
But I just can't remember no number, a number I can use.
Directory don't have it, central done forgot it,
I've gotta find a number to use.
Trying to check out her number, trying to run down her line.
Operator said that's priv'ledged information,
And it ain't no business of mine.
It's floodin' down in Texas, poles are out in Utah,
Gotta find a private line.
She could be hangin' 'round the steel mill,
Working in a house of blue lights.
Riding a getaway bus out of Portland, talking to the night.
I don't know where she's going, I don't care where she's been,
Long as she's doin' it right. Long as she's doin' it right.

I guess only wine gets better with age, eh? ;) And telephones, of course! ;D

Since it's apparently safe to be off-topic, in an off-topic topic:(whew!), ;) May I present this for your consideration: ;)

Foreigner - Love on the Telephone:

(Better versions are available elsewhere (especially on vinyl!!), like on Spotify... ;D )
I've rather gotten into Foreigner recently, mostly due to Grand Theft Auto 5 having "Dirty white boy" on one of the in-game radio stations, and just for the heck of it, here's Dirty white boy too:

Young Lust - Pink Floyd (has actual recording of conversation with operator attempting to complete call)
Chantilly Lace - J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson (lyric is mostly one side of a telephone conversation)
Here is a rare Classic: Jimmie Dodd (of the Mouseketeers) singing The Telephone Song, circa 1956.
Because the Forum does not allow direct uploads of MP3 files, I have inserted it into this ZIP file. Simply download the ZIP, extract the MP3, and enjoy!

Went to visit my older brother, and found this song in his folder of Christmas songs on his computer!

None of the lyrics really have anything to do with telephones, but there is a riff throughout that's reminiscent of a rotary dial.

"Come On Phone" by Jean Shepard, 1973
'Days of Pearly Spencer' by David McWilliams. 1967.
A phone features prominently in the promo video and the 'low tech' vocal effect heard during the song was added via phone call - David made a call to the recording studio which was recorded and became part of this iconic tune:

Agreed, the German version sucks, although performed by renowned artists.
German translations of international hits often fail completely. The Beatles did a song in German (a translation of "I want to hold your hand") which likewise by far did not reach the quality of the original. And Elvis' version of "Muss i denn" (a German traditional) is outright embarassing...
