I have never seen this on a phone. Is the earpiece functional? Does the rotary dial get trumped bythe touchtone?  Electronics guys, please chime in on this one.

One doesn't supersede the other.  Either can be used to dial a number.

I have one of those myself. works pretty well, although I only tried it a couple times.

Off the subject, but that may possibly be a soft plastic version.

Could  be, it's a 1959. I have three 1959's , all hard plastic. My 1958 was soft however.

I haven't seen this particular gadget before, but I suspect it's just a tone generator--the buttons produce beeps that are then picked up by the element, same as your voice would be, and transmitted down the line. I doubt it's wired into the dial mechanism.

I've seen a similar one that wasn't mounted on the handset. The user would just hold it up to the mouthpiece and punch in the numbers to sound the tones. I think it was battery-operated.
