Photo sent to me by one of my newsletter subscribers! Don't know where she came across this, but am trying to find out!

A Skype phone !!! Anyone recognize it? Definitely different, and definitely not our modern idea of skype!! Could it be a Rusky payphone???

My guess is Soviet.  Little did we in the west know that the communists had Skype ;D

That would be my guess as well. Interesting to see what we can dig up about this unusual one!

The thing that tipped me off is the fact that it highly resembles the skype logo.

Maybe it's Photoshop.
Could be, Bill, but I blew up the photo looking for obvious signs it had been photoshopped (without blowing it up), and couldn't find any... It still likely is, though. The metal of the logo and the rivets appears to have the same age as the rest of it. Now, I have to convince her to let it go, if she actually owns it!

The metal tag is part of the original phone.  Someone overlayed the Skype logo over it.  Look up "soviet payphone" and you will see similar phones with that tag.

Hi Larry:

One of the ideas I have been going on as well. Just have to see it in person to be sure :D

Definitely a photoshop of the skype logo over the existing metal tag.

In my blow-up below, notice that most of the grey in the background of the tag has been retouched, except an area which looks like it was original below the upper left rivet.  The area of grey above the logo looks very unnatural.  And there is a slight lighter haze around the letters, most noticeable in the lower part of the e.

Adam;
I did just what you did, and came to the exact same conclusion. I found if you use the transparency option, on my photo program, it prevents that problem. I superimposes a ghost image over the original, the you darken the letters, an there you go.

And it is so easy to fix. Five minute photoshop touch-up. Could be even better if I took the time. If this phone is for sale but without the Skype logo on it, that would be fraudulent misrepresentation of real property.

"Soviet payphone" images:  http://tinyurl.com/ae76ejy
As you can see from my first message at the top of the topic, I had it figured out that it was a Soviet payphone...

> "Could it be a Rusky payphone???"

At the time, though, I was suspicious about the Skype label, and wondering if perhaps there happened to be a Soviet telco also calling itself skype.
