Mute a Phone

Is anyone else watching this?  I can't figure out how this attaches to a phone.  I just assumed it was for a candlestick phone, but maybe it attaches to something else?

Looks to me like it may just go into the mouth piece and be talked thru....the large end for the mouth??

So, since it doesn't attach to anything, someone would carry this around with them to put into the bakelite mouthpiece to try and make his conversation private.  Interesting.  Would need some big pockets to carry that thing around.
