I received a white bakelite Ericsson 11420/2/W phone today, and it has a noisy rotary dial. Well, it's not so much that it is noisy when being turned, but it makes an odd noise when it is back in position, and every now and then during turning it makes the noise, though not often. Since I really can't describe it any better, I filmed it. Anyone got an idea what that noise could be?

I have several European phones whose dials make noises like that.

I do not have any of those, but it is slightly louder than a Norwegian phone from the same era, Could you please take some pictures (or even film) the rear of the dial?
I have to admit I would not have thought about it, but I was surprised when I got an Automatic Electric dial for the first time, how silent!

It is the governor that is a bit dirty.

Clean the mechanism, first. Read here for some hinst and tips:

And for this specific dial, I wrote an article about restoring telephones in which the same model dial is restored. You can read there how to get to the governor and clean it and please make sure you put the plastic wheel with the 3 tabs back in the correct position:

Because of dust collected over the years the dial starts to sound a bit scrapy (cannot describe it any better). Wiping it with a clean paper tissue will remove that and will result in a much cleaner sounding dial.

But I must say that this type of dial does have a tendency to go noisy over the years. Much more then some other designs.
