For only $49.95 + shipping you can own a retired spy phone!

I don't know if it is indeed a spy phone as the seller suggests but it is red and it has a lot of added switches.

Any idea what the intention was?

I would think that the CIA or any other spy agency would spring for something a bit more formally made, like a multi-line desk set with real buttons.

This phone could have been something a freaker made up though to fool Ma Bell to make free calls etc. We would need to see whats under the hood to be sure.

If it was a spy phone, shouldn't it be wearing a Groucho mask to disguise it?  ;D

Well Groucho, they have won an all expense paid weekend in The Bronx.

It's a simple combination lock.
The combinations of switches being open or closed allowed you to use the phone or not.
Seems to have two combinations set by the hidden switch under the lift in the back of the phone.
I suspect the switches are center off to make it that much more 'secure'.
Actually not a bad idea.
I have no idea what the jack in the back is for.

I'm waiting for the duck to drop down.

Might be for a recording device or external speaker, or both.

Someone needs to buy this just to make its wiring diagram

You bet your life I am . . .

Always waited on the edge of my chair back then for the contestants to say the secret word, which Groucho tried to steer them in general toward the word in what he asked them in their conversation before playing the game.

The reruns were on up here a year or so ago and they almost seemed corny with respect to the contestants partaking in the early era of TV, honest people before they bought into the "I'm on TV so let me act like a fool" generation.

That socket on the back could be for some sort of power supply. I have a phone with a similar socket that is linked to an onboard 9v battery.
