Got my Imperial and I'm almost upset.

I finally got the imperial we talked about here:
http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=7181.msg81037#msg81037

It took a little detour by my cousin's place since the seller only shipped to the US.

The bad news is the bakelite on the subset was damaged in Shipping.

The good news is i don't know if I should be upset. The seller had an extra imperial and just put it in the box as an extra and that extra phone has a nice 12 foot long white cloth cord.

You can get a reasonable reproduction cover for the 684 subset from Ray at Telephonecreations.com:

Go to products and then Western Electric.  I bought an ivory one for my Imperial from him.

Well it seems that Easyoff eats rodhium and so does varnish remover. I now have the 2 smootest D1 base you've ever seen! No sure what to turn them into now. Any suggestion?

You mean it's no longer an Imperial?  I don't know how to redo the gold color, I'm sure somebody here can pipe in, but my preference is for semi-gloss black.
The idea that a four-year degree is the only path to worthwhile knowledge is insane.
