Out with a younger family member at the weekend, went into a junk shop and came across a flip up telephone index tucked at the rear of a shelf.

I could see the youngster looking at it, baffled.
I explained what it was - to write down folks phone numbers in.
'Why?'
'Because rotary phones couldn't store telephone numbers in them'
'Oh'. (Still baffled. Staring at strange object).
I showed how it opened, this one having a 'dial' to front.
Finger into hole of dial, turn, and flip it opened.
Selected another hole flip it opened at a different index letter.

Youngster was fascinated at this Jack in the Box type object. 'How does it work?'

So, demo and explanation of how 'dialling' a letter turned the plastic inner wheel to flip the correct page.

Total amazement.  :o

It was a somewhat garish plastic object (similar to below). Age unknown. Unused, only €1.
Knowing of my interest in vintage telephones, I was asked if I would be buying it and displaying it next to one of the rotary phones.

So, just for a bit of fun, here is a Poll.
Would you have bought it?

Poll runs for 7 days.
Reveal then.  ;)

I remember those, I would of bought it because it is a see-thru go-with.
They made them with a linear selector as well.

I remember by father showing me how these  worked. I thought they were very cool.
Our first one was linear , the next was rotary. Rotary rules!

The only style I would buy now is a  see-thru one  with a rotary selector.

That one is way fancier than the one I used on a regular basis for many years.....

Remember them well!

Had I had the room, I would have got that. I had the slide thing in green, it was never used so it was pristine.
I looked for the rotary type like you pictured, but never found one in my area.
But for nostalgia yes, I would have got it in a heart beat.

The only reason I probably wouldn't have bought it the same reason I use for countless other phone paraphernalia....

Because I don't like to buy these things and pack them away, I ask myself where could I display it? I want to both see and touch it. Without price considerations at all, I'd wait for one that is more like I used to use.

I use a small linear rolodex file for that purpose, so I voted "no".

You are a stronger man than me. I really like buying cool phone stuff. Many phones/Stuff  I will sell after a year of two of display.
At that point I have the satisfaction of finding it, buying it, enjoying it and selling it.
REPEAT
You can't keep  everything.,
JMO,
Jim

I rotate my phones/stuff  between storage and display.
I like to theme my display and blend between the displays,
Items like this are fun to blend within a display,

I vote "no". I DID buy a brand new Bates flip directory—metal with the black airplane on the front because it reminded me of all the time I spent playing with my grandmothers vintage one.  There is something about the engineers that is hard to pass up

Of course we are.
We both collect clear and swirl examples, as part of our affliction  .
You seem  to collect payphones,
I have a weakness for payphones, but I am quick to point out that I don't collect them (I don't want to go there).
I probably have at least 20, but for me they are mainly eye candy. I also like oddball payphone stuff.

It makes sense that we approach the hobby the same way.
Our biggest difference is that you restore stuff, I just accumulate stuff.
JMO,

Jim
The plus side for me  is, I have a lot of unrestored phones for  trade.
